Description

American Traveler is hiring a travel RN for a Staff Float Pool Med/Surg position at a Level II Trauma Center in Montgomery, AL, requiring at least 18 months of Med/Surg and/or ICU experience and proficiency with Epic or Cerner.

Details

  • Float pool position with assignment to a home unit on the first day of orientation — potential units include Trauma Surgical, Neuroscience, Med/Surg Oncology, Clinical Decision Unit, Orthopedics, and MS/Ortho/Urology
  • Facility is a 492-bed Level II Trauma Center and Primary Stroke Center with a Level III NICU
  • Patient populations vary by unit and may include general/vascular surgery, neurological conditions (CVA, TBI, seizure, craniotomy), oncology, orthopedics, urology, and general Med/Surg diagnoses (COPD, CHF, sepsis, renal failure, etc.)
  • Patient ratios range from 1:5 to 1:6 depending on unit assignment
  • Telemetry is monitored by Telemetry Techs; RNs are required to interpret and confirm strip readings every 4 hours
  • 12-hour day shifts (7:00 AM – 7:00 PM), with 36 hours per week standard
  • Night shift availability as well (7:00 PM – 7:00 AM)
  • Every other weekend rotation, or approximately 4 weekend days per month
  • No on-call requirements
  • Floating may occur to like units (e.g., MS-to-MS, MS-to-ICU task, MS-to-ER holds)
  • EMR: Cerner (experience preferred)
  • IV pumps: Plum 360 | Medication dispensing: Omnicell | Monitors: Spacelabs
  • Schedule runs on a 4-week cycle with no self-scheduling — Smart Square is used for scheduling

Requirements

  • Active AL RN license or compact RN license required
  • Current BLS and NIHSS certifications required
  • Minimum 18 months of Med/Surg and/or ICU experience required
  • Epic or Cerner EMR experience required; Cerner required if experience is strictly ICU-based
  • Chemo administration certification preferred for oncology unit assignment
  • Telemetry interpretation experience preferred
  • Skills vary by unit and may include wound care, chest tubes, trach care, NGT, PEG, IV starts, central line blood draws, ostomy care, PCA pumps, wound vacs, and more
  • At least 1 year of trauma/surgical experience required for Trauma Surgical unit assignment
  • SSN, DOB (day and month), copy of certifications, and one reference from a charge nurse or above within the past 12 months required for consideration

Additional Information

  • First-time travelers are welcome to apply, provided they meet the minimum experience requirements
  • Former permanent staff must have been separated for at least 6 months (from last shift worked to contract start date) before being considered as a traveler
  • Candidates must reside more than 60 miles from the facility to be eligible
  • Orientation consists of 24 hours of classroom time and 24 hours of on-unit training for new or returning travelers absent for 1+ year; rehire orientation varies based on last date worked
  • Unit support includes CNAs (1:6 for vitals, ADLs, glucose checks), charge nurses, HUC/receptionist, phlebotomy, IV/VAT team, hospitalist, and telemetry monitoring techs
  • One major and one minor seasonal holiday coverage required per policy; holiday scheduling is not contractually guaranteed off in advance
  • Scrubs may be any color
  • Parking is available in the parking deck on levels 2–4 only
