Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Surgical ICU (SICU) position at a Level 2 trauma center, requiring a minimum of 2 years of ICU experience and active ACLS, BLS, and NIHSS certifications.
Details
- Work in a 16-bed SICU (plus 2 procedural beds) within an acute care hospital that serves as a tertiary care center
- Level 2 trauma center with a high-acuity surgical patient population including cardiovascular surgery (CABG, AVR, MVR, AAA), traumas, NSTEMI/STEMI, vascular, neuro, general, ortho, and ENT surgery
- Nurse-to-patient ratios: 1:2 standard, 1:1 for higher acuity patients (e.g., CRRT, immediate post-op hearts, MTP, OPO), and 1:3 for med-surg/floor-status patients
- RNs are required to titrate drips including epi, norepi, propofol, precedex, vasopressin, dobutamine, heparin, insulin, dopamine, neo, and milrinone
- RNs monitor their own patients' telemetry using GE monitors and are responsible for reading and documenting rhythm strips
- RT is available 24/7 with full respiratory equipment including ventilators, BiPAP, and Vapotherm
- Intensivist available in-house 24/7; charge nurse present every shift
- 12-hour shifts (0700–1930 or 1900–0730); variable day/night schedule with preference accommodation
- Every other weekend required (more if willing); every other holiday required
- Charting system: Cerner (transitioning to Epic)
- Floating may be required to the MICU or to a patient observer role within the hospital if not needed in the SICU
Requirements
- Active WI or Compact RN license required by start date
- Required certifications: ACLS (AHA), BLS (AHA), and NIHSS — all must be active
- Minimum 2 years of ICU RN experience required, with demonstrated experience in high-acuity surgical patient populations
- Experience with titrating vasoactive and sedation drips required
- BSN not required
- Two professional references required for consideration: one from a supervisor within the last 12 months of relevant experience, and one from a peer or supervisor within the last 3 years of relevant specialty experience
- Former permanent staff of this health system must have an end date at least 6 months prior to the candidate's application date, and hospital approval is required
Additional Information
- Preferred certifications include TNCC; experience with CRRT, IABP, Impella, and ECMO is not required but highly valued
- All post-op Day 1 open-heart patients are cared for by all unit nurses; immediate post-op heart patients are managed 1:1 by specifically trained nurses
- Orientation consists of one day of system onboarding/CBT, followed by two orientation shifts on the unit, plus completion of a skills checklist
- Nurse aides are available on day shift only (one NA for the entire unit); night shift typically does not have NA coverage
- No specific scrub color required — clean and professional attire expected
- Candidates residing within 80 miles of the facility are considered local and may receive a different pay rate
- First-time travelers are not explicitly noted as welcome; candidates should have a strong ICU background given the high-acuity environment
