Description

American Traveler is hiring a travel RN for a Surgical ICU (SICU) position at a Level II trauma center, requiring at least 2 years of ICU experience and night shift availability.

Details

• Work in a 16-bed SICU (plus 2 procedural beds) within an acute care hospital setting that serves as a tertiary care center
• Level II trauma center with a high-acuity, diverse surgical patient population including cardiovascular surgery (CABG, AVR, MVR, AAA), trauma, NSTEMI/STEMI, vascular, neuro, general, ortho, and ENT surgery
• Nurse-to-patient ratios: 1:2 standard, 1:1 for higher acuity patients (e.g., CRRT, immediate post-op hearts, MTP, OPO), 1:3 for med-surg/floor status patients
• RNs are required to titrate drips; common drips include epi, norepi, propofol, precedex, vasopressin, dobutamine, heparin, insulin, dopamine, neo, and milrinone
• RNs monitor and document their own telemetry rhythm strips using GE monitors (no tele techs on unit)
• Respiratory therapy available 24/7 with full equipment including vents, BiPAP, and Vapotherm
• Intensivist in house 24/7
• Night shift: 1900–0730, 12-hour shifts
• Every other weekend required (more if willing)
• EMR: Cerner (transitioning to Epic)

Requirements

• Active WI or compact RN license required by start date
• Required certifications: ACLS (AHA), BLS (AHA), and NIHSS — all must be active
• Minimum 2 years of ICU RN experience required
• Experience with high-acuity surgical and cardiovascular ICU patient populations required
• Cerner experience preferred given current EMR in use
• 2 professional references required for consideration: 1 supervisor reference from within the last 12 months of relevant experience, and 1 peer or supervisor reference from within the last 3 years of relevant experience

Additional Information

• TNCC certification is preferred but not required
• Experience with CRRT, IABP, Impella, and ECMO is not required but is strongly preferred
• All nurses care for POD 1 heart patients; immediate post-op cardiac patients are cared for 1:1 by specifically trained nurses
• Charge nurse present on every shift (typically without a patient assignment); nursing house supervisor available 24/7
• One nursing assistant covers the entire unit during day shift; NA coverage is not typical on nights
• Floating may be required to the MICU if not needed in SICU; in low-census situations, may serve as a patient observer within the hospital
• No specific scrub color required — clean and professional attire expected
• Orientation consists of one day of system onboarding/CBT, followed by two orientation shifts on the unit, plus a skills checklist completion
• Holiday coverage required every other holiday (more if willing)
• Candidates living within 80 miles of the facility are considered local, which affects the travel pay rate
• Former permanent employees of this health system must have an end date at least 6 months prior to their consideration date, and hospital approval is required
• First-time travelers are not explicitly approved — ICU experience and acuity requirements make this position best suited for experienced travelers
