Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a PCU Float position at a Level I Trauma, Magnet-designated acute care teaching hospital, requiring Epic proficiency and comfort floating across all PCU and Med/Surg units.
Details
- Float position covering all PCU and Med/Surg (MS) units within a large academic, Magnet-designated, Level I Trauma Center (Adult & Pediatric)
- PCU patient ratio averages 5:1; MS patient ratio averages 6:1 and may flex up to 7:1
- Night shift schedule: 3x12-hour shifts, 6:45 PM – 7:15 AM
- Staffing needs are re-evaluated every 4 hours, meaning travelers may float 2–3 times per shift
- Weekend requirement: every other weekend (EOW) or 6 weekend shifts per 6-week scheduling block
- One holiday shift required per 13-week contract
- Epic EMR experience required
- Patient population includes telemetry, stepdown, PCU, and general med/surg cases with cardiovascular and complex medical presentations
Requirements
- Active VA state RN license or Compact RN license required; pending license accepted only if candidate holds a single-state license from a non-compact state
- Current BLS and ACLS certifications required
- Prior experience in telemetry, stepdown, PCU, DOU, or IMC settings required
- Cardiovascular experience including pre/post cardiac catheterization care required
- Proficiency in cardiac monitoring, dysrhythmia interpretation and management, and titrating cardiac drips
- Experience with IV therapy, phlebotomy, and blood product administration
- Skilled in central line care, trach management, and non-invasive airway support (nasal cannula, CPAP/BiPAP)
- Experience with chest tube management (Emerson/PleurEvac)
- Ability to manage PCA and heparin protocols, administer IV insulin, and care for patients with endocrine/metabolic conditions
- Ability to participate in Rapid Response and Code teams
- Must be comfortable floating across all PCU and MS units
- Two professional references required for consideration
- Copy of driver's license and Social Security card required for consideration

- This is a float role — candidates must be adaptable and comfortable working across multiple units per shift
- The hospital is a 703-bed academic teaching facility affiliated with the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine, offering exposure to a high-acuity, diverse patient population
- Facility is an Advanced Thrombectomy Capable Stroke Center with a dedicated children's hospital
- Local candidates are accepted; a radius rule applies to this position
- All RTO, block scheduling, and special scheduling requests must be submitted at the time of application
