Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Progressive Care Unit (PCU/Stepdown) position requiring at least 2 years of experience, ACLS/BLS/NIHSS certifications, and the ability to titrate drips in an acute care setting.

Details

  • Acute care stepdown/PCU unit in a hospital setting
  • 33-bed unit serving a diverse patient population including young adults through geriatrics with diagnoses such as sepsis, STEMI, CHF, chest pain, stroke, renal failure, COPD, DKA, and complex multisystem failure
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:4-5; CNAs available at approximately 1:10 ratio (varies with census)
  • RNs are required to titrate drips including Heparin, Amiodarone, Cardizem, Nitroglycerin, IV antibiotics, and Insulin
  • Respiratory therapy equipment in use includes BiPAP and Airvo
  • Telemetry monitor techs are present on the unit; RNs are required to independently read and interpret their own telemetry strips
  • EMR system: Epic
  • 12-hour day shifts; shift times are 0630–1900 (days) and 1830–0700 (nights)
  • Every other weekend required
  • Holiday coverage required based on unit needs
  • Travelers may be floated to MedSurg, Inpatient Rehab, or Skilled Care
  • 13-week contract

Requirements

  • Active NE or Compact (NLC) RN license — must be active at time of consideration; pending licenses are not accepted
  • Current certifications required: BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS — pending certifications are not accepted
  • Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
  • Stepdown or PCU experience required
  • Experience titrating cardiac and vasoactive drips required
  • Epic EMR experience
  • A valid driver's license is required for consideration and will be used to verify residence address
  • Two professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years, both including dates of employment and eligibility for rehire
  • Candidates must reside more than 50 miles from the facility to be eligible for this position

Additional Information

  • Nurses are responsible for admitting and discharging patients within the same shift, often within a 6-hour window — strong time management and adaptability are essential
  • A charge nurse is present on each shift and carries an assignment
  • Scrub color: Navy Blue for RNs
  • Orientation consists of one week of classroom training followed by two 12-hour shifts on the floor
  • A pass/fail open-book skills exam is administered on the first Friday of orientation — a score of 90% or higher is required to pass
  • Artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care departments; refusal to comply may result to contract termination
  • Successful candidates are described as team-oriented, positive, and committed to bedside report and hourly rounding
  • RTO must be requested upfront and is limited to 7 or fewer days per 13-week contract; additional RTO will not be approved after the consideration process
  • Candidates who are currently or have been directly employed (full-time, part-time, or PRN) by any CommonSpirit-affiliated facility — including CHI and/or Dignity — within the past year are not eligible; candidates employed PRN through outside staffing firms will be considered
