Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a MedSurg/Telemetry Float Pool position at a Level II Trauma facility in West Virginia, requiring ACLS certification and the ability to pass a cardiac rhythm exam.

Details

  • Acute care hospital setting at a Level II Trauma facility
  • Float Pool covers six units: 6N (36 beds), 7N (29 beds), 4N (36 beds), 5S (36 beds), 6S (36 beds), and Critical Care (20 beds)
  • Patient population includes CHF, cardiac cath, chest pain, pneumonia, chronic renal disease, COPD, orthopedic, and oncology cases (chemotherapy administered by permanent staff only)
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio is generally 1:5–6 on most units for both day and night shifts, with occasional ratios of 1:7 toward end of shift depending on acuity
  • Telemetry monitoring via Philips; most units have monitor techs, but RNs must be able to read and interpret rhythm strips independently
  • CPAP and BiPap present on units; managed by Respiratory Therapy
  • CNAs are available on all units
  • EMR: Epic
  • 12-hour night shifts (7p–7a)
  • Every-other-weekend requirement (Saturday and Sunday for both day and night shifts)
  • Float Pool RNs report to the clinical coordinator's office prior to shift start for unit assignment; will likely be assigned a parent unit and basic telemetry patients within scope of practice
  • No drip titration required

Requirements

  • Active WV or Compact RN license required
  • Current BLS and ACLS certifications required
  • Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
  • Must be able to read and interpret cardiac rhythm strips
  • Must pass a facility cardiac rhythm/EKG exam prior to starting
  • Epic EMR experience
  • Valid, unexpired driver's license required for consideration
  • Candidates must reside more than 50 miles from the facility to be eligible

Additional Information

  • Float Pool RNs will be assigned to units based on daily need and are expected to care for basic telemetry patients within their scope of practice
  • Charge nurse available on every unit 24/7; day charge does not carry a patient assignment, night charge does
  • Orientation consists of 1–2 shifts with a preceptor
  • Royal blue scrubs required
  • Holiday rotation shared with permanent staff
  • Travelers who have previously worked at any WVU Medicine location must have taken a 2-year break before returning; cumulative time worked within the WVU system is also subject to a 2-year break requirement after one year of total service

Pros

Coworkers were great, very welcoming

Cons

Was told in phone interview that max ratio would be 1:9. Reality was 1:15. Unit was considered transitional, but patients were more like med/surg. Not willing to risk my license for such unsafe ratios.
