Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Level 3 NICU position in Rapid City, SD, requiring at least 1.5 years of NICU experience and an active SD or Compact RN license.

Details

  • Level 3 NICU with 28 beds and an average census of 13–16 patients
  • Patient population includes neonates of all gestational ages with diagnoses such as low birth weight, high-frequency ventilation, nitric oxide therapy, total body cooling, and feeders/growers — no ECMO or cardiac surgery
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:1 to 1:4
  • Respiratory Therapy (RT) is available on the unit
  • 24/7 coverage by neonatologists (3 on staff) and neonatal nurse practitioners (10 on staff)
  • 24/7 transport team available; patients requiring surgery are transferred out as there is no dedicated pediatric surgical team
  • Support staff includes CNAs (1:10 ratio), charge nurses (1:25), lactation consultants, and phlebotomy performed by RNs; no IV/VAT team on site
  • Charting via Epic; Alaris pumps and Omnicell medication dispensing used
  • 12-hour variable shifts available in 36 or 48-hour per week contract options
  • No set weekend rotation, though travelers may end up working primarily weekends
  • Low census on-call may be required
  • Coverage required for 2 out of 4 major holidays
  • Floating may be required to PICU, Pediatrics, Postpartum, Newborn Nursery, or Adult Constant Observation (overflow on peds unit)

Requirements

  • Active RN license — South Dakota (SD) or Compact license required
  • Graduation from a board of nursing-approved nursing education program
  • Minimum 1.5 years of NICU experience required
  • Required certifications: BLS, NRP, and PALS
  • STABLE certification preferred
  • Skills required include vent management, IV starts, chest tube management, and IV medication titration
  • Neonatal resuscitation experience preferred (charge nurse attends deliveries)
  • Epic EMR experience preferred; candidates without Epic experience may require facility approval
  • Two professional references dated within the past year required for consideration
  • DOB and SSN required for consideration

Additional Information

  • First-time travelers are considered only with 2 or more years of NICU experience
  • Candidates must reside more than 100 miles from the facility to be eligible for this position
  • Former permanent staff must wait a full year before returning as a traveler
  • Orientation includes a general traveler orientation plus 1 day and 1 night shift on the unit
  • Pre-approved time off requests may be accommodated with management approval
  • Navy scrubs required
  • Free parking is available on site
