Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg Float Pool position at a Level II Trauma Center in Montgomery, AL, requiring at least 18 months of Med/Surg experience and an AL or compact RN license.
Details
- Work within a float pool serving multiple Med/Surg units at a 492-bed Level II Trauma Center and Primary Stroke Center
- A home unit will be assigned on the first day of orientation; float assignments may include like units (MS-to-MS, MS-to-ICU task, MS-to-ER/MS holds)
- Units include: Trauma Surgical (6N), Neuroscience (5S), MS/Oncology (5N), Clinical Decision Unit (4S), Orthopedics (3S), and MS/Ortho/Urology (3N)
- Patient populations vary by unit and include general surgery and vascular, neurological (CVA, TBI, seizure, craniotomy, spinal fusion), oncology, palliative care, ETOH withdrawal, orthopedic/spine, urology, ENT, and general Med/Surg diagnoses (COPD, CHF, sepsis, renal failure, etc.)
- Patient ratios range from 1:5 to 1:6 depending on unit
- Skills utilized across units include wound care, chest tubes, trach care, PEG/NGT, IV starts, central line care, ostomy care, foleys, drains, restraints, C-collar, and PCA pumps
- Telemetry is monitored by Telemetry Techs; RNs are required to interpret and confirm telemetry strip readings every 4 hours
- EMR: Cerner (experience preferred)
- Equipment includes Plum 360 IV pumps, Omnicell medication dispensing, and Spacelabs monitors
- 12-hour day shifts, 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM; 36 hours per week with potential for 48
- Every other weekend or 4 weekend days per month required
- No on-call responsibilities
- 13-week contract
Requirements
- Active AL or compact RN license required
- Current BLS and NIHSS certifications required
- Minimum 18 months of Med/Surg experience required
- At least 1 year of trauma/surgical experience required for Trauma Surgical unit consideration
- Chemo administration certification highly preferred for MS/Oncology unit
- Proficiency in core Med/Surg clinical skills including IV starts, wound care, chest tubes, trach care, and medication administration/documentation
- Ability to interpret and confirm telemetry strip readings
- Candidates must reside more than 60 miles from the facility to be eligible
- Former permanent staff must have been separated for at least 6 months before being eligible as a traveler
- Two forms of identification (DOB and SSN) required for consideration
- One professional reference from a charge nurse or above within the past 12 months required for consideration
Additional Information
- First-time travelers are welcome to apply with at least 18 months of Med/Surg experience
- Return travelers who have been absent from the facility for 1 or more years will complete 24 hours of classroom orientation plus 24 hours of on-unit orientation
- Unit support includes CNAs (1:6 ratio), charge nurse, receptionist/HUC, phlebotomy, IV/VAT team, and hospitalists
- Scheduling is managed on a 4-week cycle using Smart Square; self-scheduling is not available
- Holiday coverage is expected for one major and one minor seasonal holiday per policy
- Candidates with extensive time-off requests during the contract period should be aware that certain dates require manager approval and may not be approved
- No scrub color requirement — any color is acceptable
- Parking is available in the parking deck on levels 2 through 4 only
- An interview is required as part of the hiring process
