Description
American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a Medical Oncology PCU (Progressive Care Unit) position requiring high-acuity PCU experience and telemetry skills, with oncology experience preferred but not required.
Details
- Work in a 36-bed Oncology Telemetry unit with over 24 beds dedicated to PCU level of care within a large academic cancer hospital
- Medical Oncology unit with progressive care and a small amount of med-surg; patient diagnoses include solid tumor, orthopedic oncology, and thoracic oncology
- PCU patient ratio is 1:3; Med-Surg Telemetry ratio is 1:4-5
- Pediatric patients are extremely rare on this unit and would typically be managed by permanent staff; pediatric experience is not required
- Shift is nights, 3x12-hour shifts (19:00–07:30)
- Day/Night rotating contract is possible; if accepted, shift assignments (days, nights, or a combination) are determined by department needs and reviewed every 4-week scheduling period
- Self-scheduling requests are submitted prior to finalization of the schedule
- Floating is required within units of equivalent or lower acuity
- Equipment used includes GE B450 telemetry monitors, Alaris pumps, PCA pumps, Stryker beds, bladder scanners, and continuous bladder irrigation systems
- Epic EMR (implied by academic cancer center setting — confirm with recruiter if critical)
Requirements
- Active OH RN license or a compact RN license currently in hand
- Current certifications required: BLS (BCLS), ACLS, and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
- High-acuity PCU experience required
- 2+ years of oncology experience preferred but not required
- Previous travel nursing experience preferred
- Required clinical skills include: telemetry/dysrhythmia interpretation, rapid response team utilization, feeding tube care, port access, blood product administration, central/PICC/peripheral line management, IV insertion, heparin protocols, cardiac drip management (non-titrating and titrating), PCA management, chest tube management (Emerson/Pleur-evac), external CPAP/BiPAP, HFNC, ABG interpretation, nasal cannula use, and tracheostomy management
- Preferred skills include: dysrhythmia management, IV/insulin drip titration, phlebotomy, chemotherapy administration and monitoring, wound care/wound vac, arterial line management, surgical drain management, and non-invasive airway management
- 2 professional supervisor references from within the past 2 years required for consideration
- Full 7-year work history with all gaps explained required for consideration
Additional Information
- Orientation consists of two weeks: the first week is Monday–Friday dayshift classroom/general orientation, followed by a second week of 36 hours of on-unit orientation with a preceptor
- Heavy emphasis on infection prevention protocols and patient fall prevention
- No break between assignments is required when changing representation at this facility (except for Sterile Processing Techs, who still require a 30-day break)
- All time-off and scheduling requests must be submitted at the time of initial application for consideration

Cons
Scheduled every weekend, floated for the first 6 weeks of contract every shift. Not traveler friendly even though they say they are. Staff are treated well not travelers.
