Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Stepdown/IMU position at an acute care facility in Wheeling, WV, requiring telemetry interpretation skills and a minimum of 2 years of experience.

Details

  • 30-bed Intermediate Care Unit (IMU) with a mix of private and semi-private rooms in an acute care hospital setting
  • Common patient diagnoses include chest pain, rule-out MI, CHF, arrhythmias, post-pacer, pre/post cardiac cath, and patients requiring intermediate care acuity
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio goal is 1:4, though ratios of 1:5 are common and 1:6 is possible
  • Unit uses Sunrise as the primary EMR; Epic is also referenced for the facility
  • Nihon Kohden telemetry monitors are used on the unit; RNs must be able to read and interpret their own telemetry strips independently
  • RNs are required to titrate drips including Amiodarone, Cardizem, Dopamine, Dobutamine, Labetalol, Nitroglycerin, Heparin, and occasionally Lasix
  • All respiratory equipment (AirVo high-flow, Respironics BiPAP) is managed by Respiratory Therapy
  • IV team is available in-house 24/7 and performs all IV starts; a PICC/Midline team is also available
  • Hospitalist, Intensivist, and residents are available in-house 24/7
  • Pharmacy is in-house 24/7 with Pyxis medication dispensing
  • 12-hour day shifts; staff must be on the unit ready by 6:45 AM for a 7 AM start
  • Weekends are required; Friday, Saturday, and Sunday are all considered weekend shifts, with 4 weekend day shifts required per 4-week schedule
  • Day shift workers are required to work a minimum of 3 night shifts per 4-week schedule
  • Self-scheduling is allowed provided unit needs are met
  • Floating is required into Telemetry or Med/Surg units with ratios up to 1:6, and occasionally 1:7 in Med/Surg
  • 13-week contract

Requirements

  • Active WV or Compact RN license required
  • Current certifications required: BLS, ACLS, and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
  • Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
  • Ability to read and interpret cardiac telemetry strips independently
  • Experience titrating vasoactive and cardiac drips required
  • Valid, unexpired driver's license required for consideration
  • Any licensing discrepancies or hits must be disclosed upfront

Additional Information

  • Orientation consists of approximately 4 hours with HR on day one, followed by the remaining hours on the unit with a preceptor, plus a full second day with a preceptor before independent practice
  • Charge nurses carry a full patient assignment on both day and night shifts
  • Unit typically has 2–3 CNAs with a CNA-to-patient ratio of 1:10–12
  • Travelers are expected to be flexible for holiday coverage, though permanent staff typically cover most holidays
  • RN scrub dress code: navy blue top and bottom with navy scrub jackets; hoodies are not permitted
  • Travelers who have previously worked at any WVU Medicine location must have taken a 2-year break before reapplying
  • Travelers may not work within the WVU system for longer than one cumulative year before taking a 2-year break
  • Candidates must reside more than 50 miles from the facility to be eligible for this position
  • Two professional references are required for consideration: one supervisor reference and one peer or additional supervisor reference
  • A skills checklist completed within the past year is required for consideration
