Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a 13-week Stepdown/IMU travel assignment in Wheeling, WV, requiring ACLS, BLS, and NIHSS certifications with the ability to titrate cardiac drips and interpret telemetry strips.
Details
- 30-bed Intermediate Medical Unit (IMU) in an acute care hospital setting, with 14 private and 16 semi-private rooms
- Patient population includes chest pain, rule-out MI, CHF, arrhythmias, post-pacer, pre/post cardiac cath (radial band management and removal, groin checks), CHF, and patients on Tikosyn therapy
- Patient ratio goal is 1:4, though typically runs 1:5 and occasionally 1:6
- Unit uses Nihon Kohden telemetry monitors; telemetry techs are available, but RNs must be able to independently read and interpret their own strips
- RNs must be able to titrate drips including Amiodarone, Cardizem, Dopamine, Dobutamine, Labetalol, Nitroglycerin, Heparin, and occasionally Lasix
- Respiratory equipment (AirVo high-flow, Respironics BiPAP) is managed exclusively by Respiratory Therapy
- EMR system is Sunrise (Epic family); IV team is in-house 24/7 and performs all IV starts
- 12-hour night shifts; must be on the unit ready to begin by 6:45 PM
- Weekend requirement: 4 weekend night shifts per 4-week schedule (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday are all considered weekend shifts)
- Self-scheduling is permitted as long as unit needs are met, with up to 4 requested days off per month
- Floating into Telemetry or Med/Surg units is required as needed, with ratios up to 1:6 (occasionally 1:7 in Med/Surg)
Requirements
- Active WV or compact RN license required
- Current certifications required: BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS
- Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
- Stepdown or IMU experience required, including cardiac monitoring and drip titration
- Ability to independently read and interpret telemetry strips
- A copy of an unexpired driver's license is required for consideration
- Any licensing hits or disciplinary actions must be disclosed
Additional Information
- Orientation consists of approximately 4 hours with HR on day one, followed by the remaining time on the unit with a preceptor; day two is also spent on the unit with a preceptor, after which the nurse works independently
- Unit is supported by a hospitalist, intensivist, and residents in-house 24/7, along with RT, pharmacy (Pyxis), IV team, and PICC/Midline team all available around the clock
- Charge nurses carry a full patient assignment on both day and night shifts
- Unit typically has 2–3 CNAs with a ratio of 1:10–12
- RNs are required to wear navy blue scrub tops and bottoms with navy scrub jackets; hoodies are not permitted
- Travelers are generally not required to work many holidays, as holiday shifts are typically covered by permanent staff
- Candidates must reside more than 50 miles from the facility to be eligible for this position
- Travelers who have previously worked at any WVU Medicine location must have taken a minimum 2-year break before being eligible to reapply
- Travelers may not work within the WVU system for more than one cumulative year before a 2-year break is required
- Two references are required for consideration: one supervisor reference and one peer or additional supervisor reference (e.g., Charge RN)
