Description
American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a Medical Oncology Progressive Care Unit (PCU) position requiring high-acuity PCU experience and telemetry skills in an oncology setting.
Details
- Work in a 36-bed Medical Oncology Telemetry unit with over 24 beds dedicated to PCU-level care
- Patient population includes solid tumor, orthopedic oncology, and thoracic oncology diagnoses; unit also serves a small med-surg population
- PCU nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:3; med-surg telemetry ratio is 1:4-5
- Day/night rotating schedule possible — shift assignments are reviewed every 4-week scheduling period based on departmental needs
- Night shift: 3x12-hour shifts, 19:00–07:30
- Self-scheduling requests are submitted prior to the final schedule being posted
- Floating required within units of equivalent or lower acuity
- Equipment used includes GE B450 telemetry monitors, Alaris pumps, PCA pumps, Stryker beds, bladder scanners, and continuous bladder irrigation setups
- Oncology experience preferred but not required
Requirements
- Active OH or compact RN license required
- Current certifications: BLS (BCLS), ACLS, and NIH Stroke Scale
- Minimum 2 years of high-acuity PCU experience required
- Telemetry skills required, including interpretation of dysrhythmias
- Required clinical skills: feeding tube care and management, port access, blood product administration, central/PICC/peripheral line care and management, IV insertion, heparin protocols, cardiac drip management (non-titrating and titrating), PCA management, chest tube management (Emerson/Pleur-evac), external CPAP/BiPAP, high flow nasal cannula (HFNC), ABG interpretation, tracheostomy management
- Pediatric experience is NOT required
- Previous travel nursing experience preferred
- 2 professional references from a supervisor within the past 2 years required for consideration
- Full 7-year work history with all gaps explained required for consideration
Additional Information
- Orientation consists of one week of Monday–Friday dayshift training followed by 36 hours of on-unit orientation with a preceptor
- Strong emphasis on infection prevention protocols and patient fall prevention
- Preferred skills include: management of dysrhythmias, IV insulin and insulin drip titration, phlebotomy, chemotherapy administration and monitoring, wound care/wound vac, arterial line management, surgical drain management, and non-invasive airway management
- Pediatric patients are extremely rare on this unit and are typically managed by permanent staff
- All time off and scheduling requests must be submitted at the time of initial application
- No break between assignments is required when changing representation at this facility (except for Sterile Processing Techs)

Units are nice, staff are kind. Single patient rooms with 4:1 ratios day and night on med surg.
Cons
Scheduled every weekend, floated for the first 6 weeks of contract every shift. Not traveler friendly even though they say they are. Staff are treated well not travelers.
