Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg Orthopedics & Trauma position at a Level I Trauma Center, requiring a minimum of 2 years of experience and an active NE or compact RN license.
Details
- Acute care hospital setting on a 55-bed Med/Surg Ortho Trauma unit (4th Floor North & South)
- Level I Trauma Center
- Patient population includes joint replacements, fractures, colon resections, COPD exacerbation, prostatectomy, cellulitis, sepsis, ortho trauma, GI bleeds, pneumonia, and failure to thrive — serving patients of diverse cultural backgrounds including Spanish, Karen, and Burmese-speaking populations
- Nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:5-6; CNAs/patient care techs available at a 1:10-20 ratio
- Telemetry techs on unit to interpret strips; RNs should maintain basic tele awareness
- RNs required to titrate Heparin, lidocaine, and ketamine drips; PCA pumps also in use
- Charge nurse present on each shift and carries an assignment
- EMR: Epic
- 12-hour night shifts (1830–0700); day shift also available (0630–1900)
- Schedules posted 6 weeks in advance; limited block scheduling approved
- Typically every other weekend required; additional weekend coverage may be needed based on department demand
- 2–3 holidays required between Thanksgiving and New Year's
- Floating required to other Med/Surg areas or units with Med/Surg patients awaiting a bed
- 13-week contract
Requirements
- Active NE state or compact (NLC) RN license required — pending licenses not accepted
- Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
- Current BLS (AHA) certification required; ACLS preferred
- Med/Surg experience required; telemetry awareness expected
- Epic EMR experience
- Candidates must permanently reside at least 50 miles from the facility — a valid driver's license is required for consideration and used to verify permanent address
- Candidates may not be currently employed (full-time, part-time, or PRN) at any CommonSpirit, CHI, or Dignity-affiliated facility
- 2 professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years, both including dates of employment and eligibility for rehire
- Copy of driver's license required for consideration
Additional Information
- Unit orientation consists of 2 days of department-specific training, followed by a pass/fail open-book skills exam on the final day of orientation — a minimum score of 90% is required to pass
- Mechanical lifts are available in every other patient room
- Strong emphasis on hourly rounding and responsiveness; unit sees high volume of admissions and discharges daily
- Success on this unit requires strong time management, good attendance, teamwork, and a patient-first attitude
- Artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care areas
- RNs are required to wear navy blue scrubs
- RTO must be submitted upfront; 7 days or fewer per 13-week contract — additional RTO will not be approved after submission
