Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced ICU RN for a float pool position at a Level II Trauma Center in Montgomery, AL, requiring at least 2 years of experience and proficiency in advanced critical care skills across multiple ICU specialties.

- Float pool position covering multiple ICU units within a 492-bed Level II Trauma Center and Primary Stroke Center
- Possible home unit assignments include General Cardiac ICU (10 beds), CVICU (12 beds), MICU (14 beds), Neuro ICU (14 beds), and Surgical ICU (14 beds)
- Patient population spans cardiac, cardiovascular surgical, pulmonary, neurological, medical, and surgical/trauma critical care cases
- Patient ratio is 1:2
- General Cardiac ICU skills include vent care, hemodynamic monitoring, medication titrations, arterial lines, IABP, Impella, EKOS, CRRT (PrismaFlex), chest tubes, Swan-Ganz catheters, FloTrac monitoring, and hypothermia protocol
- CVICU skills include Swan-Ganz catheters, arterial lines, hemodynamic monitoring, chest tubes, CRRT, IABP, Impella, EKOS, vent management, and Tandem Life/Tandem Lung
- MICU skills include arterial lines, trach care, chest tubes, vasopressor and sedation management, and central lines
- Neuro ICU skills include trach care, arterial lines, vent/ETT management, EVD, and ICP monitoring
- Surgical ICU skills include trach care, arterial lines, chest tubes, wound care, drip management (pressors and sedation), with CRRT preferred
- RNs are required to read and interpret ICU telemetry/monitoring
- EMR: Cerner (experience required or preferred for first-time travelers)
- IV pumps: Plum 360 | Medication dispensing: Omnicell | Monitors: Spacelabs
- 12-hour day shifts (7:00 AM – 7:00 PM) and night shifts (7:00 PM – 7:00 AM), 36 hours per week
- Floating required to like units (e.g., ICU-to-ICU, ICU-to-MS task limited to 3, ICU-to-ER/ICU holds)
- Every other weekend rotation required; back-to-back weekends possible but rare
- No on-call requirements
- 6-week scheduling cycle
Requirements
- Active AL RN license or Compact RN license required
- Required certifications: BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS
- Minimum 2 years of ICU nursing experience required
- First-time travelers accepted with at least 2 years of ICU experience and Cerner or Epic EMR experience
- Experience with advanced critical care equipment and procedures relevant to assigned unit(s) required
- Ability to read and interpret ICU telemetry monitoring strips required
- Must reside more than 60 miles from the facility to be eligible
- Required for consideration: 1 professional reference from a charge nurse or above within the past 12 months, copy of certifications, full SSN, and date of birth (day and month)
Additional Information
- A home unit will be assigned on the first day of orientation
- New travelers to the facility or those returning after 1+ year away will complete 24 hours of classroom orientation followed by 24 hours of on-unit orientation
- Orientation schedule for rehires will be determined based on their last date at the facility
- One major and one minor seasonal holiday per policy is expected; travelers will not be guaranteed specific holidays off
- Blackout dates apply during high-demand periods throughout the year and require manager approval for any RTO
- Former permanent staff must wait 6 months before being considered for a traveler assignment
- Unit support includes CNAs (1:10 ratio), a charge nurse each shift, phlebotomy, IV/VAT team, hospitalist, and Spacelabs monitoring
- An interview (SimpliFi format) is required as part of the hiring process
- Scrubs: any color accepted
- On-campus staff parking is available
