Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg Oncology night shift position at a Level II Trauma facility in West Virginia, requiring a minimum of 2 years of experience and an active WV or compact RN license.
Details
- Acute care hospital setting on a 36-bed Med/Surg, Post-Op, Oncology, and Telemetry unit
- Patient population includes general Med/Surg, post-op (lap chole, lap appy — no post-op ortho), oncology patients with complications (neutropenic precautions, pneumonia, infections), and occasional psych patients requiring 1:1 sitter coverage
- Typical nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:5–6
- Heparin is the only drip administered on this unit — no cardiac drips
- Philips telemetry monitors are in use; a central monitor tech covers the entire hospital, but RNs must be able to read and interpret rhythm strips independently
- CPAP and BiPap are used on the unit; managed by Respiratory Therapy
- Chest tubes are common, including malignant patients discharged with PleurX chest tubes — experience with these is a strong plus
- Permanent staff administer chemotherapy; travelers are not expected to administer chemo
- Charting is performed in Epic
- 12-hour night shifts (7p–7a)
- Every-other-weekend requirement (Saturday and Sunday)
- Floating to other Med/Surg or Telemetry units may be required
- 13-week contract
Requirements
- Active WV or compact RN license required
- Current BLS certification (AHA) required
- Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
- Must reside more than 50 miles from the facility to be eligible for this position
- A copy of a valid, unexpired driver's license is required for consideration
- ONS/ONCC Chemotherapy Biotherapy certification is a plus
- Experience with chest tubes and/or PleurX chest tube management is a strong plus
- Ability to read and interpret cardiac rhythm strips independently
Additional Information
- Level II Trauma facility
- 3 CNAs are available on both day and night shifts to support the nursing team
- A charge nurse is available 24/7; on days the charge nurse does not carry a patient assignment, but on nights the charge nurse does take patients
- Holidays are worked in rotation with permanent staff
- Royal blue scrubs are required; artificial nails are not permitted
- Travelers who have previously worked at any WVU Medicine location must have taken a 2-year break before re-applying
- Travelers may not work within the WVU system for longer than one year cumulatively before a 2-year break is required
- EKG testing is required for this unit and must be passed prior to starting
- All candidates interview directly with the unit manager

Pros
Coworkers were great, very welcoming
Cons
Was told in phone interview that max ratio would be 1:9. Reality was 1:15. Unit was considered transitional, but patients were more like med/surg. Not willing to risk my license for such unsafe ratios.
