Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg Orthopedic Trauma position at a Level I Trauma Center, requiring at least 2 years of experience and night shift availability.

Details

• Acute care setting on a 55-bed Med/Surg Orthopedic Trauma unit (4th Floor)
• Patient population includes joint replacements, fractures, colon resections, COPD exacerbations, prostatectomy, cellulitis, sepsis, ortho trauma, GI bleeds, pneumonia, and failure to thrive
• Nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:5-6; nurse aides/patient care techs available at a 1:10-20 ratio
• Telemetry monitoring is supported by tele techs for interpretation; RNs are expected to have basic telemetry awareness
• RNs are required to titrate Heparin, lidocaine, and ketamine drips; PCA pumps are also used
• 12-hour night shifts (1830–0700)
• Every other weekend required, with potential for additional weekend coverage based on department needs
• 2–3 holidays required between Thanksgiving and New Year's
• Floating required to other Med/Surg areas or units holding Med/Surg patients
• Epic EMR is used in this position
• Limited block scheduling may be approved; schedules are posted 6 weeks in advance
• 13-week contract

Requirements

• Active NE state or Compact (NLC) RN license required; pending licenses not accepted
• Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
• Current BLS certification (AHA) required; ACLS preferred
• Med/Surg experience required; orthopedic or trauma experience strongly relevant given unit focus
• Basic telemetry awareness required
• Experience with drip titration (Heparin, lidocaine, ketamine) required
• Epic EMR experience
• Driver's license required for consideration (used to verify residence outside the 50-mile radius)
• Two professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years, including dates of employment and eligibility for rehire

Additional Information

• Level I Trauma Center facility
• Candidates must reside more than 50 miles from the facility; permanent address will be verified via driver's license
• Candidates who are currently or were recently (within the past year) employed full time, part time, or PRN directly by any CommonSpirit-affiliated facility (including CHI and/or Dignity) are not eligible; candidates who worked PRN through outside staffing firms will be considered
• RNs must pass an open-book skills exam (90% passing score required) administered on the Friday of orientation; failure results in contract termination
• Unit orientation consists of 2 days of department-specific training, plus 12 hours of general orientation
• The unit serves a diverse patient population, including Spanish-, Karen-, and Burmese-speaking patients
• Mechanical lifts are available in every other room
• Strong emphasis on hourly rounding and patient responsiveness
• This unit experiences high patient turnover with frequent admissions and discharges daily
• A charge nurse is present on each shift; the charge nurse carries a patient assignment
• Navy blue scrubs are required for RNs
• Artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care areas; refusal to remove them will result in contract termination
• RTO must be disclosed upfront; no more than 7 days per 13-week contract will be approved, and additional RTO will not be approved after consideration
