Description
American Traveler is hiring a travel RN for a Med/Surg Telemetry Float Pool position at a Level II Trauma facility in West Virginia, requiring 2 years of experience, ACLS, and the ability to read and interpret cardiac rhythms.
Details
- Acute care hospital setting at a Level II Trauma Center
- Float Pool covering up to 6 Med/Surg Telemetry units: 6N (36 beds), 7N (29 beds), 4N (36 beds), 5S (36 beds), 6S (36 beds), and Critical Care (20 beds)
- Patient population includes CHF, cardiac cath, chest pain, pneumonia, chronic renal disease, COPD, orthopedic, and oncology diagnoses (travelers will not administer chemotherapy)
- Nurse-to-patient ratio is primarily 1:5-6 on most units; ratio may occasionally reach 1:7 toward end of shift based on acuity
- Telemetry monitoring via Philips system; most units have monitor techs, but RNs must be able to read and interpret strips independently
- CPAP and BiPap present on units; managed by Respiratory Therapy
- CNAs are available on all units
- Charge nurse available 24/7 on every unit; day charge does not take a patient assignment, night charge does
- Drip titration is not required
- Float Pool RNs report to the clinical coordinator's office before shift start for unit assignment and will typically be assigned a parent unit with basic telemetry patients within their scope of practice
- If no bed holds exist on a scheduled day, RNs may be deployed throughout the facility; when bed holds are present, RNs may assist with ED bed hold coverage
- EMR: Epic
- 12-hour night shifts (7p–7a)
- Every-other-weekend requirement (Saturday and Sunday)
- Holiday rotation shared with permanent staff
- 13-week contract
Requirements
- Active WV RN license or Compact RN license currently in hand
- Current BLS and ACLS certifications required
- Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
- Must successfully pass a cardiac rhythm (EKG) exam prior to starting — candidates with ACLS are expected to pass
- Ability to read and interpret cardiac monitor strips independently
- Must reside more than 50 miles from the facility to be eligible for the travel pay rate
- Copy of an unexpired driver's license required for consideration
Additional Information
- Royal blue scrubs required
- No artificial (false) nails permitted
- Candidates who have previously worked at any WVU Medicine location must have taken a minimum 2-year break before re-applying
- Travelers may not work within the WVU Medicine system for longer than one cumulative year before a 2-year break is required
- EKG testing is required for this unit and must be passed prior to placement
- First-time travelers are not explicitly noted as accepted — ED experience is not required

Pros
Coworkers were great, very welcoming
Cons
Was told in phone interview that max ratio would be 1:9. Reality was 1:15. Unit was considered transitional, but patients were more like med/surg. Not willing to risk my license for such unsafe ratios.
