Description
American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for an Emergency Department position at a Level 2 Trauma Center in Rapid City, SD, requiring a minimum of 2 years of ED experience and a full suite of emergency certifications.
Details
- Emergency Department of a hospital with 33 main ED beds, including 8 trauma/resuscitation beds, 4 behavioral health rooms, and a vertical care area for ESI 3-4 patients
- Sees 150–180 patients daily across a wide acuity range, from minor complaints to critical and trauma cases
- Level 2 Trauma Center with a heavy trauma population including stab wounds, GSWs, MVCs, drownings, and falls — particularly active during summer months
- Designated Complete Stroke Center, accepting stroke symptom patients up to 24 hours from onset
- Patient population spans neonates to geriatrics, including sepsis, DKA, respiratory illness, GI bleeds, cardiac patients, and critically ill pediatric patients
- Cardiac catheterization lab on site; PICU available for critically ill pediatric patients
- RN patient ratio is 1:4–5
- Variable 12-hour shifts; possible shift start times include 0630, 1000, 1200, 1400, and 1830 — travelers working variable shifts will not work both days and nights in the same week
- Travelers may potentially work every weekend depending on staffing needs
- No on-call requirements
- May float to inpatient Med/Surg, PCU, or ICU areas as a task nurse only (not taking a full assignment)
- EMR: Epic (experience preferred); also uses Omnicell and Alaris pumps
Requirements
- Active RN license — SD license or Compact RN license required
- Required certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS, TNCC, and PALS; CPI or MAB/MOAB preferred
- Minimum 2 years of ED-specific RN experience, excluding travel experience, strongly preferred
- Candidates with 1.5 years of ED experience (excluding travel) plus 2 years of experience outside the ED may be considered with manager approval
- Must be comfortable performing sexual assault evidence collection (buccal swabs, fingernail scraping, clothing collection, and victim interviewing); pelvic exams are not required
- Proficient in ESI triage assessments and ability to differentiate acuity levels
- Strong critical thinking, communication, and prioritization skills required
- Must reside more than 100 miles from any Monument Health facility to be eligible for this position
- Two professional references dated within the past year required for consideration
- DOB and SSN required for consideration
Additional Information
- First-time travelers will not be considered for this position
- Previous permanent staff must wait a full year before returning in a travel capacity
- Unit support includes ED Techs, a Lead Tech, 24/7 charge nurse coverage, 24/7 physician and NP coverage, hospitalist coverage, 24/7 phlebotomy, respiratory therapy, radiology/CT, pharmacy tech, and on-unit security
- Orientation includes an 8-hour facility NEO, 4 hours of ED-specific education, and a minimum of two 12-hour shifts on the unit
- Travelers are expected to participate in sexual assault care rotations with permanent staff; a 24/7 SA Quality Coordinator and resource booklet are available for support throughout each case
- May be expected to precept nursing students
- Holiday coverage required only if needed
- Time off requests require manager approval; no RTO requests will be considered during the first 3 weeks of August (Sturgis Bike Rally)
