Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg position at a Critical Access Hospital, requiring ACLS, BLS, and PALS certifications with night shift availability and ER float flexibility.
Details
- Acute care Med/Surg unit within a Critical Access Hospital (CAH)
- 20-bed unit with a 1:5 nurse-to-patient ratio
- Common diagnoses include CHF, bowel obstruction, A-fib, falls, and swingbed patients
- Nurses are required to titrate drips including insulin, heparin, and Levophed; set-rate drips include amiodarone
- No monitor techs on unit — RNs read and document their own cardiac strips each shift using Mindray monitors
- Nurses manage respiratory equipment (Hamilton C1 ventilator, CPAP, BiPap, high-flow); ventilated patients are not kept on this unit
- MEDITECH EMR used on this unit
- 12-hour night shifts (7p–7a)
- Every 3rd weekend required (shifts available 7a–7p or 7p–7a)
- Float to the ER as needed; travelers are not the first to float but flexibility is appreciated
- No on-call requirements
- 13-week contract
Requirements
- Active ND or Compact (NLC) RN license, fully active at time of consideration — pending licenses not accepted
- Active certifications required: BLS (AHA), ACLS (AHA), and PALS (AHA) — pending certifications not accepted
- Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
- Strong foundational skills required: patient assessments, infusion pump operation, medication administration, teamwork, and reliability
- A driver's license must be provided for consideration
- Two professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years, both including dates of employment and eligibility for rehire
Additional Information
- Critical Access Hospital environment where staff are cross-trained and expected to handle a broad range of clinical situations
- Charge nurse coverage available 24/7; charge nurses do not carry patient assignments, as they also cover the ER
- CNAs and PCTs on the unit assist with vital signs, I&O documentation, and ADLs
- Nursing supervisor available Monday through Friday; no house supervisor on site
- Orientation is 3–6 shifts depending on staff availability
- Schedule is manager-assigned and posted 6 weeks in advance; block scheduling may be available based on staffing needs
- Holiday rotation participation is desired
- No specific scrub color required
- ER experience is preferred but not required
- First-time travelers are welcome to apply
- Candidates who have been directly employed (full-time, part-time, or PRN) by any CommonSpirit or CHI-affiliated facility within the past year are not eligible; candidates placed PRN through outside firms will be considered
