Description

American Traveler is hiring a travel RN for a Med/Surg position at an acute care hospital in Weirton, WV, requiring at least 1 year of experience and a WV or compact RN license.

Details

• Acute care hospital Med/Surg unit (Level 8-23) with 48 beds
• Common patient diagnoses include pneumonia, UTI, altered mental status, GI bleed, alcohol withdrawal, and falls/weakness
• Nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:5-7 on days and 1:6-8 on nights
• PCTs/CNAs are available on the unit at an average ratio of 1:10-12, performing vitals, BGMs, EKGs, heart monitor application, bathing, feeding, toileting, and repositioning
• Monitor techs on Level 5 read and monitor telemetry for all patients and notify nurses of any concerns — nurses are not required to read or interpret telemetry strips
• Respiratory therapy manages all respiratory equipment (BiPAP, CPAP, high-flow O2, breathing treatments, inhalers, ABGs); RNs are responsible for monitoring only
• RNs are required to titrate drips (e.g., heparin, Bumex, Lasix), but cardiac drip titration is not required
• Charting is done in Cerner
• 12-hour day shifts (7am–7pm)
• Weekends required every other weekend
• No on-call or standby requirement
• Floating may be required to other Med/Surg, Med/Surg-Tele, or IMC units for lower-acuity patients
• 13-week contract

Requirements

• Active WV or compact RN license required
• Current BLS certification required
• Minimum 1 year of RN experience required
• BSN is not required
• Copy of an unexpired driver's license required for consideration
• Any licensing hits must be disclosed upfront
• Candidate must reside more than 50 miles from the facility to be eligible

• Travelers are expected to be flexible and help fill gaps in the permanent staff schedule
• No self-scheduling or block scheduling — the manager creates the schedule and will work with staff on requested time off
• If working rotating shifts, days and nights will be spread across separate weeks (typically 2 weeks of days, then 2 weeks of nights)
• Holiday rotation may apply
• Charge nurses are present on each shift; on days, 2 charges are scheduled and may carry a patient assignment; at night, if only 1 charge is scheduled, they do not take an assignment
• Orientation consists of 1 day with an educator/computer systems overview and 1 day with a preceptor
• RN scrub color is navy blue
• Travelers who have previously worked at any WVU Medicine location must have taken a 2-year break before reapplying; cumulative experience applies and travelers may not work within the WVU system for more than one continuous year
• Submission profile must include 7 years of work history (or from graduation, whichever is less) with no gaps greater than 30 days, 2 references (at least 1 supervisor), a skills checklist completed within the past year, and copies of certifications and driver's license
