Description
American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a Float Pool position at an acute care hospital in West Virginia, requiring 5 years of experience and the ability to float across multiple units of varying acuity.
Details
- Float Pool position within an acute care hospital setting, with potential float assignments to CCU, IMC, Med/Surg, Skilled Care, and ED based on skillset
- Patient population includes diagnoses such as NSTEMI, pneumonia, sepsis, diabetes, heart disease, and diverticulitis
- Patient ratios vary by unit: CCU 1:2-3, IMC 1:4-6, MS Level 7 1:5-6, MS Level 8 1:5-8, Skilled Care 1:8-10
- Nurse aides/patient care techs available with ratios of 1:7-15, assisting with ADLs, vitals, bathing, feeding, and repositioning
- Respiratory therapy is assigned across multiple units and manages ventilators, trachs, BiPAP, CPAP, and high-flow equipment; nurses are expected to troubleshoot this equipment
- Monitor technicians are available 24/7; nurses are expected to read and interpret telemetry strips, perform measurements, and identify rhythms
- RNs working in the CCU or ED are expected to titrate critical drips, including Heparin
- Charting via Cerner EMR
- 12-hour night shifts, 3 shifts per week, with every other weekend required
- Self-scheduling with schedules made 4 weeks at a time; travelers are expected to be flexible and help fill gaps in permanent staffing
- Unit assignments communicated via text message within 2 hours prior to shift start
- May be included in holiday rotation (Group A or Group B)
- No on-call or standby requirement
Requirements
- Active WV or Compact RN license required
- Current BLS and ACLS certifications required
- Minimum 5 years of RN experience required
- Ideal candidates have at least 1 year of ICU or ED experience and are comfortable floating to lower-acuity units
- Must be comfortable managing patient ratios ranging from 1:2 to 1:10 across varying acuity levels
- Strong telemetry interpretation skills required
- Ability to troubleshoot respiratory equipment (vents, trachs, BiPAP, CPAP) required
- Flexibility, adaptability, multi-functional expertise, and strong problem-solving skills are essential
- Copy of an unexpired driver's license required for consideration
- Any licensing hits must be disclosed at time of consideration
Additional Information
- Orientation consists of 1 day of general orientation and 1 day with a preceptor on a single unit before working independently
- Charge nurses are present on each shift and may take patient assignments as needed
- Navy blue scrubs required
- Candidates must reside more than 50 miles from the facility to be eligible for this position
- Travelers who have previously worked at any WVU Medicine location must have taken a 2-year break before re-applying
- Travelers are not permitted to work within the WVU system for more than one cumulative year without a 2-year break
- Two references are required: one supervisor reference and one peer or additional supervisor reference (e.g., Charge RN)
