Description
American Traveler is hiring a travel RN for a PCU/Progressive Care Unit position within a corrections-based oncology unit, requiring Epic experience and a valid OH or compact RN license.
Details
- Work setting is a locked corrections unit for Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections (ODRC) inmates within a cancer hospital, with access controlled by Corrections Officers (COs)
- Unit serves patients with active oncology diagnoses and treatments (solid tumors and hematology), oncology workup admissions, and non-oncology diagnoses such as COPD, sepsis, pneumonia, and surgical cases
- Nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:3 on the PCU and 1:4-5 on Med-Surg
- CO-to-inmate ratio is 1:2
- Floating to various Oncology Medical-Surgical (MS) units is required, with some shifts assigned to PCU and others to MS
- Schedule is nights (3x12-hour shifts, 19:00–07:30); candidates accepting a rotating D/N contract may be scheduled for days, nights, or a combination based on departmental needs, reviewed every 4-week scheduling period
- Weekend shift requirements vary based on unit needs
- EMR: Epic (experience required); Medication system: Pyxis
- Key procedures and skills include telemetry monitoring, dysrhythmia interpretation and management, IV insulin protocols, feeding tube care, pre/post hemodialysis and renal failure management, blood product administration, central line/PICC/peripheral line management, heparin protocols, cardiac drip management (no titration), PCA management, BiPAP/CPAP, HFNC, ABG interpretation, tracheostomy care, and non-invasive airway management
Requirements
- Valid OH state or compact RN license required and must be in hand at time of consideration
- Current certifications required: BLS and ACLS; NIHSS preferred
- Minimum 2 years of PCU/telemetry or MS/tele experience, with at least 1 year of current specialty experience; experience must fall within the past 3 years
- Epic EMR experience required
- Oncology experience preferred but not required
- Charge RN experience preferred
- Required skills: IV therapy/phlebotomy, blood product administration, central line care/management, peripheral line care/management, PICC line management, starting and maintaining IVs, BiPAP/CPAP management, HFNC, ABG interpretation, non-invasive airway management, oxygen administration, tracheostomy care/management, feeding tube care/management, heparin protocols, cardiac drip management (no titration), PCA, telemetry monitoring, dysrhythmia interpretation and management, IV insulin protocols, pre/post hemodialysis management, renal failure management, and isolation precautions/PPE
- Preferred skills: arterial line management, chest tube management (Emerson/PleurEvac), insulin drip titration, chemotherapy monitoring, use of rapid response/code teams, and port access/management
- Nursing degree from an ACEN or CCNE accredited program required
- 2 professional references required: at least 1 must be from a manager, director, or formal leadership role (supervisor or charge RN acceptable for the second reference); coworker references are not accepted
- First-time travelers are welcome to apply
Additional Information
- Candidates must be aware of and prepared to complete the Ohio fingerprinting process promptly after accepting a contract, including traveling to an Ohio fingerprinting location if within driving distance
- Candidates currently outside Ohio but within driving distance will be required to drive to an Ohio fingerprinting location as soon as possible after booking
- All requested time off (RTO) must be submitted at the time of consideration and will be built into the contract
- Local candidates are accepted
- Former employees of the facility are eligible after a 6-month break from the facility
- Current employees of any Ohio State University hospital location are not eligible for travel assignments within the health system
- Support services available on unit include interpretation services, pharmacy, physical therapy, radiology, rapid response teams, respiratory services, social services, and patient transportation

Cons
Scheduled every weekend, floated for the first 6 weeks of contract every shift. Not traveler friendly even though they say they are. Staff are treated well not travelers.
