Description
American Traveler is seeking a float pool RN for a Med/Surg position at a Level II Trauma Center in Montgomery, AL, requiring at least 18 months of Med/Surg and/or ICU experience and proficiency with Epic or Cerner.
Details
- Float pool position — candidates will be assigned a home unit on the first day of orientation from the following units: 6 North Trauma Surgical, 5 South Neuroscience, 5 North Med/Surg Oncology, 4 South Clinical Decision Unit, 3 South Orthopedics, or 3 North MS/Ortho/Urology
- Floating may occur to like units (e.g., MS-to-MS, MS-to-ICU tasks, MS-to-ER holds)
- 12-hour night shifts (7:00 PM – 7:00 AM), 36 hours per week
- Patient ratios range from 1:5 to 1:6 depending on unit assignment
- Patient populations vary by unit and may include trauma/surgical, neurological (CVA, TBI, craniotomy, spinal fusion), oncology, palliative care, orthopedic/spine, urology, ENT, and general Med/Surg diagnoses (COPD, CHF, sepsis, renal failure, etc.)
- Telemetry is monitored by telemetry techs; RNs are required to interpret and confirm strip readings every 4 hours
- Chemo administration experience is highly preferred for the 5 North Med/Surg Oncology unit (chemo-certified RNs may administer)
- EMR: Cerner (experience preferred)
- Equipment includes Plum 360 IV pumps, Omnicell medication dispensing, and Spacelabs monitors
- Weekend rotation of every other weekend or 4 weekend days per month
- No on-call requirements
- Scheduling is managed on a 4-week cycle using Smart Square — no self-scheduling
Requirements
- Active AL RN license or compact RN license required
- Current certifications: BLS and NIHSS
- Minimum of 18 months of Med/Surg and/or ICU experience required
- Epic or Cerner EMR experience required; Cerner required if experience is strictly ICU-based
- Unit-specific skills may include wound care, chest tubes, NGT, IV starts, central line blood draws, trach care, PEG tubes, ostomy/colostomy care, wound vacs, PCA pumps, foley care, C-collar, abdominal binders, and restraints
- At least 1 year of trauma/surgical experience required for 6 North Trauma Surgical unit assignment
- Telemetry strip interpretation experience required
- SSN, DOB (day and month), copy of certifications, and one reference from a charge nurse or above from the past 12 months required for consideration
Additional Information
- This is a 492-bed Level II Trauma Center and Primary Stroke Center with a Level III NICU
- Unit support includes CNAs (1:6 ratio for VS, ADLs, and glucose checks), a receptionist/HUC, charge nurse, phlebotomy, IV/VAT team, hospitalist, and telemetry monitoring techs
- New travelers to the facility will complete 24 hours of classroom orientation followed by 24 hours of on-unit orientation
- First-time travelers are welcome to apply
- Former permanent staff must wait 6 months from their last shift worked before being eligible to return as a traveler
- Former travelers must have been away from the facility for at least 6 months before returning
- Candidates must live more than 60 miles from the facility to be eligible
- Holiday coverage is required for one major and one minor seasonal holiday per policy
- Time off requests may be approved up to 7 days, excluding facility blackout dates
- Scrubs may be worn in any color
- Parking is available in the parking deck on levels 2 through 4 only
