Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg ED Hold position at a Level II Trauma Center in Montgomery, AL, requiring at least 18 months of MS experience and an active AL or compact RN license.

- ED Hold Med/Surg unit within the Emergency Department of a 492-bed Level II Trauma Center and Primary Stroke Center
- Nurses in this role care for Med/Surg patients with admission orders who are being held in the ED — not standard ER nursing
- Patient population includes CHF exacerbation, TIA/CVA rule-out, GI/GU, weakness/dizziness, and chest pain
- Patient ratio is 1:5 with CNA support at a 1:12 ratio
- High-turnover environment — patients are frequently reassigned as beds open
- Support staff includes receptionist/HUC, phlebotomy, IV/VAT team, and hospitalists
- Telemetry monitoring is available on the unit
- EMR: Cerner | IV Pumps: Plum 360 | Medication Dispensing: Omnicell | Monitors: Spacelabs
- 12-hour day shifts, 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM, 36 hours per week with potential for 48
- Weekend rotation of every other weekend or 4 weekend days per month on a block schedule
- No on-call responsibilities
- Floating may be required to like units (e.g., MS-MS, MS-ICU tasks, MS-ER/MS holds)
- 13-week contract in Montgomery, AL
Requirements
- Active AL RN license or compact RN license required
- Required certifications: BLS, NIHSS, and CPI (or equivalent); ACLS preferred
- Minimum 18 months of Med/Surg RN experience required; ED experience is not required and is not a substitute for MS experience
- Cerner or Epic EMR experience preferred, especially for first-time travelers
- Level II Trauma Center experience preferred for first-time travelers
- Skills required include assessment, prioritization, communication, documentation, IV starts, and blood administration
- Clinical skills required: suctioning, O2 therapy, ostomy care, Foley/external catheter care, PEG/NGT care, wound care, chest tube management, fall prevention, and restraints
- Teaching facility experience preferred
- Candidates must reside more than 60 miles from the facility to be eligible
Additional Information
- This is a Med/Surg nursing assignment — the role requires understanding the transition of patients from ER to MS inpatient status and managing those care needs accordingly
- Orientation includes 24 hours of classroom time and 24 hours of on-unit training for new and returning travelers (absent for 1+ year); orientation for rehires is determined based on their last date at the facility
- Former permanent staff must wait 6 months before being considered for a travel position
- Holiday coverage is required for one major and one minor seasonal holiday per facility policy; holiday scheduling is not contractually guaranteed prior to arrival
- RTO blackout dates apply — specific dates throughout the year require advance approval and are not guaranteed
- Scrubs: any color permitted | Parking: free, behind the UAB building
- First-time travelers are welcome to apply with at least 2 years of experience, Cerner or Epic EMR experience, and Level II Trauma experience
- Travelers with 1 year of experience will also be considered
- Interviews are conducted via SimpliFi
- Reference from a charge nurse or above from the past 12 months required for consideration, along with DOB (day and month) and copies of certifications
