Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Charge Nurse role in a Critical Access Hospital (CAH) Emergency Department, requiring prior CAH ER and charge experience with night shift availability.
Details
- Works in a 20-bed Emergency Department at a Critical Access Hospital (CAH), including 2 semi-private rooms and 1 trauma bay
- Trauma Level V facility with STEMI receiving and Stroke certification capabilities
- ER nurses perform triage and manage the full continuum of patient care — no separate triage area
- Common presentations include trauma, STEMI, stroke, lacerations, abdominal pain, ear aches, and chronic pain
- Nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:4
- Common drips include Heparin, Insulin, Cardizem, Lasix, and Amiodarone
- RNs manage respiratory equipment including ventilators, CPAP, BiPAP, high-flow oxygen, and nebulizers independently (no RT on unit)
- RNs are responsible for blood draws (no phlebotomy available in the ER), EKGs, and telemetry monitoring (Mindray system)
- Charting is done in MEDITECH
- 12-hour night shifts, 7p–7a
- Every 3rd weekend (days or nights) required
- Holiday rotation required
- No on-call or standby requirement
- Floating may be required to Med/Surg or Outpatient areas as needed
Requirements
- Active ND or Compact (NLC) RN license — must be active at time of consideration; pending licenses not accepted
- Required certifications (all AHA, no pending accepted): BLS, ACLS, PALS, TNCC
- Minimum 1 year of RN experience required
- CAH Emergency Department experience is required
- Charge nurse experience is required
- Ability to remain calm and confident in high-acuity and fast-paced environments
- 2 professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years, both including dates of employment and rehire eligibility
- Valid driver's license required
Additional Information
- This is a Charge Nurse position — the ER nurse serves as the charge nurse on shift
- Supervisor coverage is available Monday–Friday, 8a–5p only; no in-house supervisor on nights or weekends
- No security staff on-site; facility uses panic buttons and controlled access after 5pm
- Psychiatric patients are intermixed throughout the ER with no designated psych or seclusion area
- Psych and med/surg hold patients may be placed on the med/surg floor when needed
- Orientation consists of 3 shifts (12-hour orientation period total)
- Scheduling is manager-driven with block scheduling available; schedule posted 4 weeks in advance
- No specific scrub color required
- Candidates must reside more than 50 miles from the facility to be eligible
- Candidates who have been directly employed (full-time, part-time, or PRN) by any CommonSpirit/CHI/Dignity facility within the past 12 months are not eligible
- MEDITECH experience is preferred but not required
- First-time travelers will be considered, but strong CAH ER experience is required
