Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Neuro ICU position at a Level 1 Trauma facility, requiring EVD experience and a minimum of 18 months of Neuro ICU experience.
Details
- 32-bed Neuro ICU within a Level 1 Trauma, acute care hospital setting — part of a world-renowned neurological disease treatment and research institution
- Patient population includes critically ill patients with neurological diagnoses; procedures include craniotomies, brain tumor removals and ablations, brain biopsies, complex spine surgeries, and scoliosis repairs
- Nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:2 in the Neuro ICU; ratio increases to 4:1 when floating to tele floors
- Ventilator management is part of the role; RT and pharmacy support available 24/7
- Philips monitors used for telemetry
- Charting via Cerner EMR
- 12-hour day shifts (7am–7pm)
- 4 weekend shifts required per 4-week period
- Holiday coverage required, integrated into core staff rotation
- Travelers are first to float and may be assigned to other ICU floors or Med/Surg Tele and Tele units
- Standby (on-call) may be assigned for scheduled shifts
- Steel grey scrubs required for Neuro floors
Requirements
- Active AZ RN license or Compact (NLC) license — must be active at time of consideration; pending licenses not accepted
- Current BLS and ACLS certifications required; pending certifications not accepted
- Minimum 18 months of Neuro ICU experience required (manager may consider candidates with less than 2 years)
- Experience in a large hospital (450+ beds) required
- Level 1 Trauma experience required
- EVD (External Ventricular Drain) experience required
- Strong neuro assessment skills and ICP monitoring experience required
- Competency in sterile technique, including Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes
- Must pass the Relias Dysrhythmia (DYS) exam prior to acceptance (2 attempts allowed)
- Two professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months, and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years — both must include dates of employment and eligibility for rehire
- Valid driver's license required for consideration
Additional Information
- Provide critical care nursing to neurological patients, including those undergoing craniotomies, tumor resections, spine surgeries, and other complex neurosurgical procedures
- Candidate must permanently reside more than 50 miles from the facility; driver's license is used to verify permanent address
- Candidates may not have been directly employed (full-time, part-time, or PRN) by any CommonSpirit, CHI, or Dignity facility within the past year; candidates who worked PRN through an outside staffing firm will be considered
- All RNs are required to complete a SIMs Lab covering Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes — this is a pass/fail evaluation and sterile field compliance is strictly enforced
- A pass/fail exam is administered on the first day of orientation; a study guide will be provided in advance
- Floor-specific orientation consists of 2 shifts on the unit
- Charge nurse is present and does not carry a patient assignment
- Natural hair color and no facial piercings are required; men must be clean-shaven for fit testing
- Personal vehicle required
- First-time travelers will be considered for this position
