Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Level III Trauma Emergency Department position requiring a minimum of 2 years of ED experience and night shift availability across two campuses.
Details
- Level III Trauma Center and Primary Stroke Center with comprehensive stroke capabilities serving a 9-county region
- ED features 30 beds with 2 trauma bays and 24 acute care beds, averaging 135 patients per day
- Patient population includes typical ED presentations with a notable 10-15% pediatric volume, geriatric patients with altered mental status, and high-acuity trauma (MVAs, GSWs, stabbings, falls, ATVs)
- Nurse-to-patient ratios vary by acuity: 1:3-4 for general acute care, 1:1 or 2:1 for Level I traumas, 1:1 for TNK (first hour), and 1:6-8 in vertical care (fast track)
- Common drips include Diltiazem, Cardene, Nitro, Propofol, Fentanyl, and Levophed
- EMR system: PulseCheck or Picis (Meditech also referenced)
- 12-hour night shifts, every other weekend required
- Position floats between two campuses approximately 16 minutes apart, as needed
- First-to-float status; floating is as helping hands only, without a patient assignment
- Fast track area referred to on-unit as 'vertical care'
- Separate triage area with a 'first eyes nurse' model; travelers may be assigned to triage after demonstrated competency during assignment
- ED holds are intermixed within the department; ED RNs care for hold patients
- Psychiatric patients are intermixed within the ED
- Security is in-house 24/7 with an off-duty officer dedicated to the ED 24/7
- Respiratory therapy is assigned to the ED 24/7 and performs ABGs; breathing treatments are shared between RNs and RT
- Phlebotomy is available in the ED 24/7
- X-ray and CT are located within the ED with dedicated transport staff
- RNs monitor their own telemetry strips
- Hybrid scheduling with a mix of self-scheduling and block scheduling
Requirements
- Active TX RN license or Compact (NLC) license required; must be active at time of consideration — pending licenses not accepted
- Required certifications (all must be active): BLS, ACLS, PALS, TNCC, and NIHSS
- Minimum 2 years of ED experience required
- Experience in a facility with comparable patient volume, trauma level, and size is required
- Must be proficient with central line placement, MTP, chest tubes, trauma, STEMIs, and strokes
- Must pass the Advanced Dysrhythmia exam (83% passing score) with up to three attempts allowed prior to contract confirmation
- 2 professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years, both including dates of employment and eligibility for rehire
- Copy of driver's license required for consideration
Additional Information
- Orientation consists of 3 shifts in the ED
- Patient Care Techs are available and can perform EKGs, wound care, assist with transport, ADLs, and setup for trauma cases including chest tubes, A-lines, and central lines
- Physician coverage includes 1 MD 24/7 with a second MD from 9AM–2AM; NP or PA staffed 24/7 with a second mid-level from 10AM–10PM
- Free-floating charge nurse who responds to codes and rapid responses on the floor; may take an assignment if needed
- The department operates with a Shared Governance structure and an active Unit-Based Council (UBC)
- Scrub color is navy; undershirts must be navy; scrub jackets are optional but must also be navy
- Rotate in with core staff for holiday coverage — 1 major holiday expected
- No on-call or standby requirement
- Attendance reliability is critical; excessive call-outs may result in termination
- Candidates who have been directly employed (full-time, part-time, or PRN) by any CommonSpirit, CHI, or Dignity Health facility within the past year are not eligible; candidates employed PRN through outside staffing firms will be considered
