Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Level III Trauma Emergency Department position requiring a minimum of 2 years of ED experience and night shift availability across two campuses.

Details

  • Level III Trauma Center and Primary Stroke Center with comprehensive stroke capabilities serving a 9-county region
  • ED features 30 beds with 2 trauma bays and 24 acute care beds, averaging 135 patients per day
  • Patient population includes typical ED presentations with a notable 10-15% pediatric volume, geriatric patients with altered mental status, and high-acuity trauma (MVAs, GSWs, stabbings, falls, ATVs)
  • Nurse-to-patient ratios vary by acuity: 1:3-4 for general acute care, 1:1 or 2:1 for Level I traumas, 1:1 for TNK (first hour), and 1:6-8 in vertical care (fast track)
  • Common drips include Diltiazem, Cardene, Nitro, Propofol, Fentanyl, and Levophed
  • EMR system: PulseCheck or Picis (Meditech also referenced)
  • 12-hour night shifts, every other weekend required
  • Position floats between two campuses approximately 16 minutes apart, as needed
  • First-to-float status; floating is as helping hands only, without a patient assignment
  • Fast track area referred to on-unit as 'vertical care'
  • Separate triage area with a 'first eyes nurse' model; travelers may be assigned to triage after demonstrated competency during assignment
  • ED holds are intermixed within the department; ED RNs care for hold patients
  • Psychiatric patients are intermixed within the ED
  • Security is in-house 24/7 with an off-duty officer dedicated to the ED 24/7
  • Respiratory therapy is assigned to the ED 24/7 and performs ABGs; breathing treatments are shared between RNs and RT
  • Phlebotomy is available in the ED 24/7
  • X-ray and CT are located within the ED with dedicated transport staff
  • RNs monitor their own telemetry strips
  • Hybrid scheduling with a mix of self-scheduling and block scheduling

Requirements

  • Active TX RN license or Compact (NLC) license required; must be active at time of consideration — pending licenses not accepted
  • Required certifications (all must be active): BLS, ACLS, PALS, TNCC, and NIHSS
  • Minimum 2 years of ED experience required
  • Experience in a facility with comparable patient volume, trauma level, and size is required
  • Must be proficient with central line placement, MTP, chest tubes, trauma, STEMIs, and strokes
  • Must pass the Advanced Dysrhythmia exam (83% passing score) with up to three attempts allowed prior to contract confirmation
  • 2 professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years, both including dates of employment and eligibility for rehire
  • Copy of driver's license required for consideration

Additional Information

  • Orientation consists of 3 shifts in the ED
  • Patient Care Techs are available and can perform EKGs, wound care, assist with transport, ADLs, and setup for trauma cases including chest tubes, A-lines, and central lines
  • Physician coverage includes 1 MD 24/7 with a second MD from 9AM–2AM; NP or PA staffed 24/7 with a second mid-level from 10AM–10PM
  • Free-floating charge nurse who responds to codes and rapid responses on the floor; may take an assignment if needed
  • The department operates with a Shared Governance structure and an active Unit-Based Council (UBC)
  • Scrub color is navy; undershirts must be navy; scrub jackets are optional but must also be navy
  • Rotate in with core staff for holiday coverage — 1 major holiday expected
  • No on-call or standby requirement
  • Attendance reliability is critical; excessive call-outs may result in termination
  • Candidates who have been directly employed (full-time, part-time, or PRN) by any CommonSpirit, CHI, or Dignity Health facility within the past year are not eligible; candidates employed PRN through outside staffing firms will be considered
