Description
American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a 13-week Stepdown/IMU travel contract in Wheeling, WV, requiring at least 2 years of experience, ACLS, and the ability to titrate cardiac drips on a 12-hour night shift schedule.
Details
- 30-bed Intermediate Medical Unit (IMU) in an acute care hospital setting
- Patient population includes chest pain, r/o MI, CHF, arrhythmias, post-pacer, pre/post cath (radial band management and removal, no sheath pulls), groin checks, intermediate care overflow, and Tikosyn therapy management
- Telemetry monitoring via Nihon Kohden equipment; RNs must be able to independently read and interpret their own tele strips, with Tele Techs also available on unit
- RNs must be able to titrate the following drips: Amiodarone, Cardizem, Dopamine, Dobutamine, Labetalol, Nitroglycerin, Heparin, and occasionally Lasix
- Respiratory equipment (AirVo high-flow, Respironics BiPAP) is managed exclusively by Respiratory Therapy
- IV team is in-house 24/7 and performs all IV starts; PICC/Midline team also available
- Charting in Epic; unit notes also reference Sunrise
- 12-hour night shifts; must be ready on the unit by 6:45 PM
- Weekend requirement: 4 weekend night shifts per 4-week schedule (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday are all considered weekend shifts)
- Goal nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:4, though 1:5 is typical and 1:6 is possible
- Unit typically has 2–3 CNAs with ratios of approximately 1:10–12
- Floating is required as needed to Telemetry or Med/Surg units, with ratios up to 1:6 and occasionally 1:7 in Med/Surg
- Self-scheduling is allowed as long as unit needs are met; staff may request up to 4 days off per month
- Hospitalist in-house 24/7; Intensivist in ICU 24/7; residents in-house 24/7
- Pharmacy in-house 24/7 with Pyxis dispensing; RT in-house 24/7
Requirements
- Active WV or Compact RN license required
- Current certifications required: BLS, ACLS, and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
- Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
- BSN not required
- Ability to independently read and interpret cardiac telemetry strips required
- Experience titrating cardiac and vasoactive drips required
- Candidates must reside more than 50 miles from the facility to be eligible
- A copy of a valid, unexpired driver's license is required for consideration
- Any licensing hits or disciplinary actions on RN license must be disclosed upfront
- Work history covering the past 7 years (or from graduation, whichever is less) with no gaps greater than 30 days is required
- Two professional references required: one supervisor reference and one peer reference (e.g., Charge RN); if the candidate worked a permanent position in the last 12 months, one supervisor reference must be from that facility
- Skills checklist completed within the past year required
Additional Information
- Manage intermediate-acuity patients including cardiac monitoring, drip titration, cath lab follow-up care, and Tikosyn therapy
- Charge nurses carry a full patient assignment on both day and night shifts
- Orientation consists of approximately 4 hours with HR on day one, followed by the remaining hours and a full second day on the unit with a preceptor; independent practice begins on day three
- Holiday flexibility is expected, though travelers are typically covered by permanent staff for most holidays
- RN scrub color: navy blue top and bottom with navy scrub jacket; hoodies are not permitted
- Candidates who have previously worked at any WVU Medicine location must have taken a 2-year break before being eligible to apply
- Travelers may not work within the WVU system for more than one cumulative year before a 2-year break is required
- First-time travelers are not explicitly excluded, but 2 years of experience is required
