Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced ICU RN for a float pool position across multiple critical care units, requiring a minimum of 2 years of ICU experience and Cerner or Epic EMR proficiency.

- Float pool position covering multiple ICU settings, including a General Cardiac ICU (10 beds), CVICU (12 beds), MICU (14 beds), Neuro ICU (14 beds), and Surgical ICU (14 beds)
- General Cardiac ICU patient population includes STEMI, post-heart cath with interventions, respiratory failure/ventilated, post-cardiac arrest, post-stroke care, renal failure, hypertensive emergency, and sepsis
- CVICU patient population includes post-op CABG, valve, thoracotomies, V-A and V-V ECMO, post-cardiac arrest, post-heart cath, post-op vascular surgery, and general critical care
- MICU patient population includes acute respiratory failure, acute renal failure, acute liver failure, DKA, and sepsis/septic shock
- Neuro ICU is a high-volume unit with rapid patient turnover; patient population includes CVA, SAH, SDH, IPH, and seizures
- Surgical ICU patient population includes post-surgical, trauma, vascular, multisystem trauma, and neuro trauma
- Patient ratio is 1:2
- RNs are required to read and monitor ICU telemetry strips
- EMR: Cerner (experience required); IV pumps: Plum 360; medication dispensing: Omnicell; monitors: Spacelabs
- Shift: 12-hour nights, 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM; 36 hours per week with potential for 48
- Scheduling runs on a 6-week cycle
- Weekend rotation required every other weekend; back-to-back weekends possible but rare
- No on-call requirements
- Floating required to like units (e.g., ICU-to-ICU, ICU-to-MS task or limited to 3, ICU-to-ER/holds)
Requirements
- Active AL RN license or compact RN license required
- Current certifications required: BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS
- Minimum 2 years of ICU experience required
- Cerner or Epic EMR experience required
- General Cardiac ICU skills: vent care, hemodynamic monitoring, medication titration, arterial lines, IABP, Impella, EKOS, CRRT (PrismaFlex), chest tube, Swan-Ganz catheter, FloTrac monitoring, titratable drip management, and hypothermia protocol
- CVICU skills: Swan-Ganz catheters, arterial lines, hemodynamic monitoring, chest tubes, CRRT, medication titration, IABP, Impella, EKOS, vent management, and Tandem Life/Tandem Lung
- MICU skills: arterial lines, trach care, chest tubes, vasopressor usage, sedation management, and central lines
- Neuro ICU skills: trach care/maintenance, arterial lines, vent/ETT management, and EVD; ICP monitoring can be taught
- Surgical ICU skills: trach care, arterial lines, chest tube management, wound care, and drip management (pressors and sedation); CRRT preferred
- Candidates must reside more than 60 miles from the facility to be eligible
- Former permanent staff must have been separated for at least 6 months before being considered as a traveler
- Required for consideration: 1 reference from charge nurse or above from the past 12 months, copy of certifications, full SSN, and DOB (day and month)
Additional Information
- Travelers will be assigned a home unit on the first day of orientation
- Orientation consists of 24 hours of classroom time followed by 24 hours on the unit for new-to-facility travelers and those who have been away for 1+ year; returning travelers' orientation depends on time since last assignment
- Unit support includes CNAs (1:10 ratio), a charge nurse each shift, phlebotomy, IV/VAT team, and hospitalist coverage
- Holiday coverage is expected for one major and one minor seasonal holiday per policy; specific holiday scheduling is not guaranteed off prior to arrival
- Scrubs: any color accepted
- Staff parking is available on campus
- First-time travelers are welcome to apply with at least 2 years of ICU experience and Cerner or Epic EMR experience
- Interviews are required; this facility does not utilize auto offers
