Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Float Pool Med/Surg position at a Level II Trauma Center in Montgomery, AL, requiring at least 18 months of Med/Surg and/or ICU experience and a valid AL or compact RN license.
Details
- Float pool position with home unit assigned on the first day of orientation — possible units include Trauma Surgical, Neuroscience, Med/Surg Oncology, Clinical Decision Unit, Orthopedics, and MS/Ortho/Urology
- Level II Trauma Center with a Level III NICU and Primary Stroke Center designation
- Patient populations vary by unit and include general surgery, vascular, neuroscience, oncology, orthopedic, urological, and general med/surg patients
- Patient ratios range from 1:5 to 1:6 depending on unit assignment
- 12-hour night shifts, 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM, 48 hours per week
- Telemetry is monitored by Telemetry Techs; RNs are required to interpret and confirm strip readings every 4 hours
- Weekend rotation required: every other weekend or 4 weekend days per month
- No on-call responsibilities
- One major and one minor seasonal holiday coverage required per policy
- Floating required to like units (e.g., MS-to-MS, MS-to-ICU tasks, MS-to-ER holds)
- EMR: Cerner (experience preferred)
- IV pumps: Plum 360 | Medication dispensing: Omnicell | Monitors: Spacelabs
- Scheduling follows a 4-week cycle with no self-scheduling — Smart Square is used
- 13-week contract
Requirements
- Active AL RN license or compact RN license required (may submit pending, but ETA must be provided)
- Current BLS and NIHSS certifications required
- Minimum 18 months of Med/Surg and/or ICU experience required
- Epic or Cerner experience required; if experience is strictly ICU, Cerner experience is required
- Trauma or surgical nursing experience required for Trauma Surgical unit assignment (minimum 1 year)
- Clinical skills required vary by unit and may include: wound care, chest tubes, NGT, IV starts, blood draws from central lines, trach care, PEG tubes, colostomy/ostomy care, PCA pumps, wound vacs, foley care, and central line dressing changes
- Chemo administration certification highly preferred for Med/Surg Oncology unit
- Telemetry experience a plus — candidates with tele experience are encouraged to highlight the details
- Candidate must reside more than 60 miles from the facility to be eligible for this position
- SSN, DOB (day and month), copy of certifications, and one reference from a charge nurse or above within the past 12 months required for consideration
Additional Information
- Unit support includes CNAs (1:6 ratio for vitals, ADLs, and glucose checks), charge nurses, HUC/receptionist, phlebotomy, IV/VAT team, hospitalists, and telemetry monitoring techs
- New travelers to the facility and return travelers absent for 1+ years will complete 24 hours of classroom orientation followed by 24 hours of on-unit orientation
- Interviews are required — this facility does not use auto-offer
- First-time travelers are welcome to apply
- Former permanent staff must have been separated for at least 6 months (from last shift worked) before being eligible to return as a traveler
- Scrubs: any color permitted
- Parking available in the parking deck on levels 2 through 4 only
- Up to 7 days of PTO may be pre-approved, excluding facility blackout dates which require manager approval
