  • Patient population includes telemetry, post-catheterization, medical/surgical with telemetry monitoring needs, and respiratory difficulty cases

  • 12-hour night shifts, 7p–7:30a
  • Every other weekend required (Friday/Saturday for night shift)
  • Rotating holidays required: Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's
  • EMR: Epic (experience preferred)
  • No on-call responsibilities
  • Floating may occur to a comparable or lower-acuity unit (telemetry or med/surg); staff may occasionally assist with admitted boarded patients in the ED or tele patients housed in the ICU

Requirements

  • Active WV or compact RN license required
  • Current certifications required: BLS (AHA), ACLS (AHA), and NIHSS
  • Minimum 5 years of RN experience required
  • At least 1 year of travel nursing experience required
  • Comfort with basic dysrhythmia interpretation and telemetry strip verification
  • Driver's license required for consideration — address must be more than 50 miles from the facility
  • 2 references required (1 supervisor, 1 peer or additional supervisor); if perm employment within the last 12 months, one supervisor reference must be from that facility
  • Skills checklist completed within the past year required for consideration

Additional Information

  • Unit currently operates as telemetry only; stepdown services are not active at this time
  • Cardiac monitoring: 10 rooms with hardwired monitors, remaining rooms use portable telemetry monitors; monitor techs on the 6th floor notify the assigned nurse of any concerns
  • Point-of-care testing includes blood glucose monitoring using the AccuChek glucometer
  • Nurses reconstitute antibiotics and may manage titrating heparin for telemetry patients
  • Respiratory therapy is available 24/7; nurses may administer nebulizers/breathing treatments but RT is nearly always accessible; no ventilators on the unit
  • Unit is supported by 2 PCTs for 20 beds, a designated charge nurse, a unit-based pharmacist (7a–3p, 5 days/week), and 24/7 hospitalist and pharmacy coverage
  • Orientation consists of approximately 3 shifts: day one includes required education modules and shadowing, day two is orientation, and day three is independent practice; the first day begins at the corporate center for badging and parking before reporting to the unit
  • Self-scheduling and block scheduling are available for travelers depending on unit needs
  • Travelers may be asked to precept or take charge based on comfort level; this is discussed in advance and never mandatory
  • EKG testing is required for this unit (pass/fail)
  • Navy blue scrubs required; nurses provide their own
  • Candidates who have previously worked at any WVU Medicine location must have taken a 2-year break before being considered
  • Travelers may not work within the WVU system for longer than one cumulative year before a 2-year break is required
  • No local candidates — must reside more than 50 miles from the facility to be eligible
