Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg Orthopedic Trauma position at a Level I Trauma Center, requiring at least 2 years of experience and active NE or Compact RN licensure.
Details
- Acute care hospital setting on a 55-bed Med/Surg Ortho Trauma unit (4th Floor North & South)
- Patient population includes joint replacements, fractures, colon resections, COPD exacerbations, prostatectomy, cellulitis, sepsis, ortho trauma, GI bleeds, pneumonia, and failure to thrive
- Nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:5-6; CNAs/PCTs on unit at a ratio of 1:10-20
- Telemetry techs interpret strips; RNs are expected to have general tele awareness
- RNs are required to titrate Heparin, lidocaine, and ketamine drips; PCA pumps also in use
- EMR: Epic
- 12-hour day shifts, 0630-1900; some night shift coverage available (1830-0700)
- 13-week contract
- Travelers will be scheduled; limited block scheduling may be approved
- Typically every other weekend required, with potential for additional coverage based on unit demand; schedules posted 6 weeks in advance
- 2-3 holidays required between Thanksgiving and New Year's
- Floating required to other medical surgical areas or units with MedSurg patients awaiting a MedSurg bed
Requirements
- Active NE or Compact (NLC) RN license required; must be active at time of consideration — pending licenses not accepted
- Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
- Required certifications: BLS (AHA); ACLS preferred
- Level I Trauma Center experience applicable to this position
- Candidates must reside at least 50 miles from the facility; a valid driver's license is required for consideration and used to verify permanent address
- Candidates may not be currently employed full-time, part-time, or PRN at any facility associated with CommonSpirit, including CHI and/or Dignity
- 2 professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years, both including dates of employment and eligibility for rehire
- Copy of driver's license required for consideration

- Unit serves a diverse patient population, including Spanish-, Karen-, and Burmese-speaking patients
- High-volume unit with frequent admissions and discharges; successful nurses excel at managing a busy day, maintaining good attendance, and prioritizing patient-centered, compassionate care
- Mechanical lifts available in every other room; strong focus on hourly rounding and responsiveness
- Charge nurse present on each shift and carries an assignment
- RNs are required to pass an open-book skills exam during orientation with a minimum score of 90%; failure to pass results in contract termination
- 2 days of unit/department-specific orientation provided (12 orientation hours total)
- RTO must be requested upfront; no more than 7 days per 13-week contract; additional RTO will not be approved after consideration
- Navy blue scrubs required; artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care areas — refusal to remove nails may result in contract termination
