Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Neuro ICU position at a Comprehensive Stroke Center, requiring a minimum of 2 years of Neuro ICU experience and an NC or compact RN license.
Details
- Neuro ICU setting within a Comprehensive Stroke Center
- Patient population includes ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes (SAH), SDH, craniotomies, carotid stents and endarterectomies, aneurysm coiling/clipping, seizures, depth electrodes, and myasthenia gravis
- Stroke patients, including ischemic and hemorrhagic types, represent one of the largest patient populations on this unit
- Patient ratios are 2:1, with the possibility of flexing to 3:1 during high census periods
- Average daily census is 11–12 patients
- Drains used on the unit include EVDs, lumbar drains, hemovacs, and Camino ICP monitoring devices
- Specialized equipment includes EVD, Lumbar Drains, Camino, LICOX, NICOM, and Arctic Sun
- EMR system is Epic; unit also uses Pyxis and SBAR
- 12-hour night shifts, 18:45–07:15 (3x12 schedule)
- Every other weekend required
- Float requirement is in place for this position
- No on-call responsibilities
- 13-week contract; longer assignments may be available
Requirements
- Active NC or compact RN license required
- Current certifications required: BLS, ACLS, and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
- Minimum of 2 years of Neuro ICU experience required — general ICU experience alone is not sufficient
- Strong Neuro Critical Care background is essential
- Required skills: mechanical ventilation, IV start, interpretation and management of dysrhythmias, blood product administration, central line care and management, continuous IV sedation, CVA/acute stroke management, EVD, ICP monitoring, post-neurosurgery management, care of ventilated patients, isolation precautions and PPE use, and lumbar drain experience
- Arterial line management experience is preferred
- Must be comfortable with a 3:1 patient ratio during high census periods
Additional Information
- First-time travelers will not be considered for this position
- Must pass an EKG competency test prior to start
- Orientation is 24 hours, completed over 2 days or 2 nights
- Scrub colors are navy blue and white
- Local candidates are accepted
- RTO is not permitted after booking and cannot be arranged onsite — any call-offs or additional RTO may result in contract cancellation
