Description
American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a Med/Surg Float Pool position at a Level II Trauma Center in Montgomery, AL, requiring a minimum of 18 months of Med/Surg and/or ICU experience and nightshift availability.
Details
- Float Pool position with home unit assigned on the first day of orientation — possible units include Trauma Surgical, Neuroscience, Med/Surg Oncology, Clinical Decision Unit, Orthopedics, and MS/Ortho/Urology
- Level II Trauma Center with a Level III NICU and Primary Stroke Center designation
- Patient populations vary by unit and include general surgery, vascular, neurological, oncology, orthopedic, urology, and general Med/Surg cases such as COPD, CHF, sepsis, and renal failure
- Patient ratios range from 1:5–6 depending on unit assignment
- Skills used across units include wound care, chest tubes, trach care, NGT/PEG tubes, IV starts, central line blood draws, ostomy care, foleys, drains, PCA pumps, and restraints
- Telemetry is monitored by Telemetry Techs; RNs are required to interpret and confirm strip readings every 4 hours
- Chemo administration experience is highly preferred for potential assignment to the Med/Surg Oncology unit
- EMR: Cerner (preferred); equipment includes Plum 360 IV pumps, Omnicell medication dispensing, and Spacelabs monitors
- 12-hour night shifts, 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM, 36 hours per week with possible 48-hour weeks
- Every other weekend or 4 weekend days per month required
- No on-call requirements
- Floating may occur to like units (MS-to-MS, MS-to-ICU task, MS-to-ER holds)
- Scheduling follows a 4-week cycle with no self-scheduling — Smart Square is used
Requirements
- Active AL RN license or a Compact RN license valid in Alabama required
- Current BLS and NIHSS certifications required
- Minimum 18 months of Med/Surg and/or ICU experience required
- Epic or Cerner EMR experience required; Cerner specifically required if experience is ICU-only
- Trauma or surgical nursing experience required for potential Trauma Surgical unit assignment (minimum 1 year)
- Telemetry strip interpretation skills required
- Must reside more than 60 miles from the facility to be eligible
- One supervisor-level reference (charge nurse or above) from the past 12 months required for consideration
- DOB (day and month) and full SSN required for consideration
- Copies of all required certifications required for consideration
Additional Information
- First-time travelers are welcome to apply, provided minimum experience requirements are met
- Staff who were previously employed at this facility must have been separated for at least 6 months (from last shift worked) before returning as a traveler
- Unit support includes CNAs (1:6 for vitals, ADLs, and glucose checks), a charge nurse, HUC/receptionist, phlebotomy, IV/VAT team, hospitalist, and telemetry monitoring techs
- New travelers to the facility and those returning after 1+ year will complete 24 hours of classroom orientation followed by 24 hours of on-unit orientation; orientation for recent rehires is determined individually
- One major and one minor seasonal holiday coverage is expected per policy; specific holiday scheduling is not guaranteed prior to arrival
- Blackout RTO periods include MLK Jr. Day weekend, Valentine's Day week, the entire month of March, Easter weekend, Mother's Day weekend, Memorial Day week, Father's Day weekend, Fourth of July, Labor Day weekend, Halloween week, Thanksgiving week, and Christmas through New Year's
- Up to 7 days of RTO may be approved, excluding blackout dates
- No scrub color restriction — any color is acceptable
- Parking is available in the parking deck on levels 2–4 only
- Interviews are conducted via SimpliFi video platform
