Description
American Traveler is seeking a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) with critical care experience for a high-volume ER and Level 1 Trauma Center at an acute care teaching hospital in Roanoke, VA.
Details
- Night shift schedule: 3x12-hour shifts, 7p–7a (4x12s available upon request)
- 13-week contract with extensions up to 26 weeks available upon request
- Adult, adolescent, and geriatric patient population across high-volume ER, neurotrauma, cardiovascular services, and medical/surgical ICU
- Patient ratio of 1:25
- Robust Assess and Treat protocol in place, including ventilator management and liberation policy
- Equipment includes Servo I, Servo U, V-60 BiPAP, Optiflow heated high flow, iNO with iNOvent, and LTV1200
- Epic EMR experience required
- Weekend requirement: every other weekend (EOW) or 6 weekend shifts per 6-week scheduling block
- Floating within skillset required
- Must work one holiday per 13-week contract
Requirements
- RRT credential issued by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) required; CRT not accepted
- VA Licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner required; other state licenses accepted with requirement to obtain 90-day temporary authorization while VA permanent license is processed — license required if applicable
- Current BLS and ACLS certifications required
- Minimum 1 year of critical care experience in a high-volume ER or Level 1 Trauma Center setting
- Experience with aerosol and medication delivery systems, including mask, trach, MDI, and Medihaler; proficiency administering medications such as Albuterol, Atrovent, Combivent, inhaled Flolan, racemic epinephrine, and related agents
- Competency in ABG interpretation and ventilator management including BiPAP, CPAP, HFNC, flow-by, high-pressure alarm troubleshooting, and mechanical ventilation weaning
- Airway management skills including extubation, oral/nasal airway placement, suctioning, sputum collection, and tracheostomy care
- Proficiency in oxygen therapy and nebulizer setups (handheld, T-piece, trach collar, ultrasonic)
- PDF copies of driver's license and Social Security card required for consideration
- Two professional references required for consideration

- Work in a 703-bed acute care Magnet-designated teaching hospital affiliated with Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine
- The facility is the region's only Level I Trauma Center for both adults and pediatrics, and is certified as an Advanced Thrombectomy Capable Stroke Center
- Provide respiratory therapy services across neurotrauma, cardiovascular, and medical/surgical ICU patient populations
- First-time travelers are considered; 1 year of travel experience preferred
