American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Telemetry Direct Observation Unit (2N) position requiring Epic proficiency and the ability to read and interpret cardiac strips.

Details

  • Acute care hospital setting on a 21-bed Med/Surg and Cardiac Observation unit (2N), typically staffed for 18 patients
  • Patient population includes pre/post cath, chest pain rule-outs on heparin drips, COPD, CHF, pacemakers, arrhythmias, and general Med/Surg diagnoses
  • Average nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:6
  • Nurse aides are available on the unit at a ratio of approximately 1:10 (sometimes 1:14–15 depending on census); aide duties include EKGs, bladder scans, fingerstick blood sugars, ADLs, and vitals
  • Charge nurse present on the unit 24/7; night charge always takes a patient assignment
  • Telemetry monitor techs are located on the 3rd floor; a real-time monitor is also available on the unit
  • Set-rate drips used include Cardizem and Amiodarone; occasional drips include Bumex and Lasix — drip titration is not required
  • Respiratory support limited to BiPAP and CPAP for supportive therapy only; high-flow oxygen is not used on this unit
  • Epic EMR is used and experience is required
  • 12-hour night shifts (7:00 PM – 7:00 AM)
  • Every-other-weekend requirement for travelers; weekend nights are Friday, Saturday, and Sunday
  • Travelers are typically the first to float and may be floated anywhere in the hospital, including ICU and Stepdown, within their skillset
  • 13-week contract

Requirements

  • Active WV RN license or compact RN license required
  • Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
  • Current AHA BLS and ACLS certifications required
  • Ability to read and interpret cardiac rhythm strips required
  • Experience with set-rate Cardizem and Amiodarone required
  • Epic EMR experience required
  • BSN not required
  • Valid driver's license copy required for consideration
  • Must reside more than 50 miles from the facility to be eligible for this travel position

Additional Information

  • This is a high-volume, fast-paced unit that can see up to 6 discharges and 6+ admissions per day
  • Orientation consists of 1 day of computer/Epic training followed by 1 day of floor shadowing with a preceptor
  • Royal blue scrubs required; scrub jackets are optional but must be an actual scrub jacket — no hoodies or sweatshirts
  • Holiday coverage may be required based on unit needs
  • All time-off requests must be submitted upfront and included in the contract; requests made after contract start require facility approval
  • Travelers who have previously worked at any WVU Medicine location must have taken a minimum 2-year break before reapplying
  • Travelers may not work within the WVU system for more than one cumulative year without taking a 2-year break
