Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Progressive Care Unit (PCU) position requiring at least 2 years of experience, telemetry skills, and a NC or compact RN license.

Details

  • 48-bed mixed-acuity PCU/Med-Surg Telemetry unit in a hospital setting
  • Patient population includes COPD exacerbations, pneumonia, acute respiratory failure, PE, COVID-19, influenza, and patients requiring chest tubes, CPAP, and BiPAP
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:4–5, with the possibility of 1:6 in high-census situations; no nurse is assigned more than one ventilator patient at a time
  • CNA support ratio of 9–10:1
  • Shift: Nights, 12-hour shifts (18:45–07:15)
  • Weekend requirement: 4 weekend shifts per 6-week period, with potential for additional shifts based on staffing needs
  • Floating required to like units
  • EMR: Epic (experience required); also uses Pyxis and SBAR documentation
  • Specialized equipment includes chest tubes, vents/trachs, CPAP/BiPAP, and drips including Dopamine, Cardizem, and Heparin
  • Block scheduling available when unit needs are met
  • 13-week contract minimum; longer contracts are welcome

Requirements

  • Active NC or compact RN license required; license pending at time of submission is acceptable
  • Current BLS and ACLS certifications required
  • NIHSS certification preferred
  • Minimum 2 years of relevant RN experience required
  • Proficiency in IV insertion, ventilator management, telemetry, CPAP/BiPAP, and interpretation and management of dysrhythmias
  • Must pass an EKG competency test prior to start
  • Two professional references from a manager or supervisor within the past 2 years required (pending at time of submission is acceptable, but must be on file before start)

Additional Information

  • First-time travelers are welcome to apply
  • Candidates who previously worked for this health system as permanent, PRN, or EP staff must wait 12 months before applying as a traveler; facility rehire approval is required
  • Unit resources include an Admission/Discharge nurse, Assistant Nurse Manager, Vascular Access Team, Rapid Response Team (RRT), Code Team, and Behavioral Health Team — plus a team lead rounding in a 3:1 model and 2 respiratory therapists and an assistant nurse manager present on every shift including weekends
  • Orientation is 24 hours; pre-start modules of approximately 8–10 hours are required and must be completed before the first day
  • No RTO is permitted during the first week of assignment due to orientation; up to 7 days of RTO may be approved provided it does not fall on a holiday
  • Candidates must be available to work 2 out of 3 major holidays
  • Scrubs are not provided; white or navy blue scrubs required
  • Local candidates are accepted; candidates residing within 50 miles of the facility are eligible at a different rate
  • Travel pairs are allowed, provided each candidate has their own transportation and is flexible with potentially different schedules
