Description
American Traveler is seeking a Chemo-Certified Oncology RN for a Med/Surg Oncology unit position requiring at least 2 years of experience, ONS certification, and night shift availability.
Details
- Med/Surg Oncology unit in a hospital setting with a daily census of 42 patients
- Primary patient population consists of general medical-surgical patients with oncology history, including diagnoses such as AKI, sepsis, cancer, septic shock, malignant neoplasms, ARF, encephalopathy, diabetic foot ulcers, and heparin drips
- Administration of chemotherapy/biotherapy via IV, PO, or injection is performed on this unit
- Target patient ratio is 1:6, though ratios may be higher during periods of increased census
- Night shift, 3x12-hour shifts (18:45–07:15)
- Every other weekend required
- Floating required to similar units and alternate inpatient care locations, including inpatient holding in the ED
- Call required if called off on a pre-scheduled shift; called-out shifts must be rescheduled
- Contract length of 13–26 weeks
- EMR: Epic (required); Pyxis medication dispensing system used on unit
- SBAR used for communication
Requirements
- Active RN license in North Carolina or a Compact RN license required
- Current ONS (Oncology Nursing Society) certification required; must be able to administer chemotherapy
- Current BLS certification required
- Minimum 2 years of relevant RN experience required
- Inpatient hospital experience required, specifically Med/Surg
- Required skills include: colostomy care, port access, blood product administration, central line blood draws, peripheral line care/management, PICC line management, heparin and insulin administration, surgical drains, chest tubes (Emerson/Pleur-evac), nasal cannula, non-invasive airway management, isolation precautions, and wound care/wound vac
- Must pass EKG testing prior to start
- Two manager/supervisor references from within the past 2 years required (pending at time of consideration is acceptable, but must be provided prior to start)
Additional Information
- First-time travelers are welcome to apply
- Local candidates within 50 miles of the facility are accepted
- Orientation consists of 24 hours (2 shifts) plus approximately 8–10 hours of pre-start online modules (Zoom, webinar, and in-person classes)
- Candidates must work 2 out of 3 major holidays
- RTO of 7 days or fewer may be auto-approved as long as it does not fall on a holiday; more than 7 days requires facility approval; no RTO is permitted during the first week of assignment due to orientation
- Contract staff will be assigned to a Storm Team and/or Hurricane Team and may be required to report during catastrophic events, mass casualty incidents, or disasters
- Contract staff are assigned equally alongside permanent staff to ensure patient coverage
- Attendance at monthly staff meetings is expected
- Travel pairs are allowed; each traveler must have their own transportation and be comfortable with potentially different schedules
- Candidates interested in contracts longer than 13 weeks should indicate this, as extensions may be available
- Any previous permanent, PRN, or EP employee of this health system must wait 12 months before applying as a traveler; facility rehire approval is required
- OCN certification and charge nurse experience are preferred but not required
- CPI certification is preferred but not required
- Scrub color: navy blue and white
