  • Patient ratios are 1:1–2, with a high number of 1:1 assignments
  • High-acuity unit with frequent bedside procedures including bronchoscopies, Swan-Ganz catheter placements, and epidurals
  • Charting via Cerner EMR
  • Philips telemetry system used on unit
  • No IV team on unit — strong IV skills are essential
  • Respiratory Therapy (RT) and Pharmacy available 24/7; pharmacy supports transplant patients
  • Intensivist on-site during days and on-call at night
  • Charge nurse assigned with no patient assignment; 2 PCTs available on days and nights during high census
  • 12-hour night shifts (7p–7a)
  • 4 weekend shifts required per 4-week schedule
  • Holidays worked per unit rotation
  • Travelers are first to float; float destinations may include ICU, MS/Tele, and possibly sister campuses, with a 1:4 ratio on Tele
  • Navy scrubs required

Requirements

  • Active AZ RN license or Compact (NLC) license — must be active at time of consideration; pending licenses will not be accepted
  • Minimum 2 years of ICU experience required; CVICU experience strongly preferred
  • Current BLS and ACLS certifications required; CCRN preferred
  • Level I Trauma experience required
  • IABP and CABG experience preferred; travelers with this background may take patients upon arrival
  • Strong IV insertion skills required (no IV team on unit)
  • Must pass the Relias Dysrhythmia exam (basic or advanced) prior to offer confirmation — 2 attempts allowed
  • Two professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years, both including dates of employment and eligibility for rehire
  • Valid driver's license required — permanent address on DL must reflect residence at least 50 miles from the facility to qualify for travel rates
  • Candidates must not have been directly employed (full-time, part-time, or PRN) by any CommonSpirit, CHI, or Dignity facility within the past year; candidates employed PRN through outside staffing firms may be considered

Additional Information

  • Day 1 orientation includes a pass/fail SIMs Lab evaluation covering Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes — sterile field competency is critical, as nurses have been released during this assessment for breaking sterile field
  • Orientation also includes educational modules on lifts, restraints, and wound care
  • 2 days of floor-specific orientation provided
  • Nurses who fail the Relias Dysrhythmia exam or the sterile technique assessment on the second attempt are ineligible to work at CommonSpirit facilities in Arizona and the Sacramento region for 6 months
  • Travelers must have their own personal vehicle
  • Natural hair color and no facial piercings are required; men must be clean-shaven for fit testing
  • This is a high-acuity unit with a large volume of bedside procedures — candidates should be comfortable in a fast-paced, complex clinical environment
