Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for an ICU Float Pool position in the Denver/Zone 3 area, requiring a minimum of 2 years of ICU experience and the ability to float across multiple facilities within a 60-mile zone.
Details
- Acute care ICU float pool position covering Zone 3, which is centered around Denver, CO and includes facilities in Lakewood, Longmont, and Westminster
- Float unit covers a combination of ICU types including MICU, SICU, TICU, and CVICU
- Nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:1–2 depending on acuity; high-acuity patients (e.g., CRRT, IABP, Impella) are staffed at 1:1; may be asked to flex up to 1:3
- Travelers may be assigned to float across acuity levels including ICU, PCU/Stepdown, and MS-Tele
- 12-hour night shifts, 7pm–7am
- Schedules are released 4–6 weeks in advance; two scheduling formats are used: Option A (assigned to a single facility for the week, with possible intra-facility floating) or Option B – Just-In-Time (JIT), where the facility is assigned 1–2 hours before shift start
- 6–9 weekend shifts required per 6-week schedule
- EMR: Epic (experience required for first-time travelers; preferred otherwise)
- No monitor techs on unit; RNs are expected to read and interpret their own telemetry strips
- Respiratory therapy equipment includes ventilators, CPAP, BiPAP, high-flow oxygen, and breathing treatments; RT may not be on the unit 24/7
- No nurse aides on unit except for sitter needs
- Designated charge nurse on each unit who typically does not carry a patient assignment, though night shift charge nurses may occasionally carry a small assignment
Requirements
- Active CO RN license or Compact (NLC) license required; must be active at time of consideration — pending licenses are not accepted
- Active certifications required: BLS (AHA), ACLS (AHA), and NIHSS — pending certifications are not accepted
- Minimum 2 years of ICU experience required; first-time travelers must have 3+ years of ICU experience and Epic experience
- Must be comfortable titrating critical drips including pressors, sedation, paralytics, antiarrhythmics, heparin, and insulin
- Candidate's permanent address must be at least 60 miles from the Denver city center (the zone's city center) to qualify for this position; a driver's license is required to verify permanent address
- Two professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years, both including dates of employment and eligibility for rehire
- BSN not required
Additional Information
- Travelers are responsible for securing housing that allows them to float throughout the full 60-mile zone, regardless of where they choose to stay
- Candidates must be physically present in-state for the week of orientation, even if initial modules are completed remotely
- Orientation consists of 1–2 days with a preceptor (approximately 12 orientation hours total)
- All time-off requests must be submitted prior to starting the assignment
- May be included in the holiday rotation
- On-call/standby requirements are rare and typically tied to low census
- No scrub color restriction — any color is acceptable
- Candidates who have been directly employed (full-time, part-time, or PRN) by any facility associated with the health system within the past year are not eligible; candidates who worked PRN through outside staffing firms will be considered
- First-time travelers are welcome to apply provided they have 3+ years of ICU experience and Epic familiarity
