Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Progressive Care Unit (PCU/Stepdown) position requiring at least 2 years of experience, ACLS/BLS/NIHSS certifications, and the ability to work 12-hour night shifts.
Details
- Acute care stepdown/PCU unit in a hospital setting
- 28-bed unit caring for adult patients including mixed medical/surgical, cardiac, and stroke patients — many arriving through the ER
- Nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:4, with patient care techs available at a 1:14 ratio
- RNs are required to titrate drips, including heparin, octreotide, and insulin
- Telemetry monitoring is in use on the unit — RNs must be able to independently read and interpret telemetry
- Specialty equipment includes code carts, LUCAS machines, Hoyer lifts, and Sit and Stand devices
- Charting is performed in Epic
- 12-hour night shifts (1830–0700)
- 6-week scheduling cycle managed by unit schedulers
- Every other weekend required
- Floating required to Med/Surg and other hospital areas, including ICU and ED, based on individual abilities
Requirements
- Active NE or Compact (NLC) RN license required — pending licenses not accepted
- Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
- Current certifications required: BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS — pending certifications not accepted
- Epic EMR experience required
- Ability to read and interpret telemetry independently
- Candidate must reside at least 50 miles from the facility — a copy of a valid driver's license is required for consideration to verify permanent address
- Candidates may not be currently or have been directly employed (full-time, part-time, or PRN) by any CommonSpirit-affiliated facility, including CHI or Dignity, within the past year
- 2 professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years, both including dates of employment and eligibility for rehire
Additional Information
- Orientation consists of one week of classroom training followed by two 12-hour shifts of unit-specific orientation
- A pass/fail open-book skills exam is administered on the Friday of orientation — a minimum score of 90% is required to continue the assignment
- This is a high-flow unit with frequent admissions, transfers, and discharges — candidates should be team-oriented and adaptable
- Unit support includes a charge nurse (who carries an assignment) on every shift, patient care techs, a unit secretary 2–3 days/week, and a stocking clerk 3 days/week
- Holiday coverage is required on a rotating basis with permanent staff
- Scrubs must be navy blue
- RTO requests (7 days or fewer per 13-week contract) must be submitted upfront — additional RTO will not be approved after that point
- Artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care areas — refusal to comply will result to contract termination
