Description
American Traveler is seeking a Chemo-Certified Oncology RN for a night shift Med/Surg Oncology position requiring a minimum of 2 years of experience and an active NC or compact RN license.
Details
- Inpatient Med/Surg unit with a primary oncology patient population
- Patient diagnoses include cancer, malignant neoplasms, AKI, sepsis, septic shock, ARF, encephalopathy, FTT, diabetic foot ulcers, and heparin drips
- Chemotherapy and biotherapy administration via IV, PO, or injection is performed on this unit
- Target nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:6; ratios may be higher during periods of increased census (daily census: 42)
- Night shift: 3x12-hour shifts, 18:45–07:15
- Every other weekend required
- Floating required to similar units and alternate care locations, including inpatient holding in the ED or other medical patient care areas
- On-call required if called off on a pre-scheduled shift; called-out shifts must be rescheduled
- Uses Epic (EMR), Pyxis (medication dispensing), and SBAR (communication)
- 13-week minimum contract; extensions up to 26 weeks accepted
Requirements
- Active NC or compact RN license required (may be pending at time of consideration)
- Current BLS certification required
- ONS Oncology Nursing Certification (OCN or equivalent chemo cert) required
- Must be able to administer chemotherapy if needed
- Minimum 2 years of relevant RN experience required
- Inpatient Med/Surg experience required
- Required skills: colostomy care, port access, blood product administration, central line blood draw, peripheral line care/management, PICC line management, heparin drips, insulin, surgical drains, chest tubes (Emerson/Pleur-evac), nasal cannula, non-invasive airway management, isolation precautions, and wound care/wound vac
- Must pass an EKG test prior to start
- Two professional references from a manager or supervisor within the past 2 years required (pending at time of consideration is acceptable)
Additional Information
- First-time travelers are welcome to apply
- Local candidates are accepted; candidates living within 50 miles of the facility are eligible at a different pay rate
- Orientation consists of 24 hours (2 shifts) plus 8–10 hours of online modules that must be completed prior to start and annually; modules are completed via online learning, Zoom, webinars, and in-person classes
- Attendance at monthly staff meetings is expected
- Contract staff are assigned equally alongside permanent staff for patient coverage
- Contract staff will be assigned to a Storm Team and/or Hurricane Team and may be required to report during catastrophic events, mass casualty incidents, or disasters
- Scrub colors: navy blue and white
- Up to 7 days of RTO can be approved as long as it does not fall on a holiday; no RTO is permitted during the first week of the assignment (orientation); additional RTO requires facility approval
- Candidates must be available to work 2 out of 3 major holidays
- Former permanent, PRN, or employee pool staff of this health system must wait 12 months before being eligible to apply as a traveler; facility rehire approval is required
- Travel pairs are allowed; each traveler must have their own transportation and be comfortable with potentially different schedules
- CPI certification and charge nurse experience are preferred
- Epic EMR experience is beneficial given its use on the unit
