Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Staff Float Pool Med/Surg position at a Level II Trauma Center in Montgomery, AL, requiring at least 18 months of Med/Surg experience and an AL or compact RN license.
Details
- Float pool position with assignment to a home unit on the first day of orientation; possible units include Trauma Surgical, Neuroscience, Med/Surg Oncology, Clinical Decision Unit, Orthopedics, and MS/Ortho/Urology
- Level II Trauma Center with a Level III NICU and Primary Stroke Center designation
- Patient populations vary by unit and include general surgery, vascular, neurological (CVA, TBI, seizure, craniotomy), oncology, orthopedic, urology, ENT, and general Med/Surg conditions such as COPD, CHF, sepsis, renal failure, and end-of-life comfort care
- Patient ratios range from 1:5 to 1:6 depending on unit
- Telemetry is monitored by telemetry techs; RNs are required to interpret and confirm strip readings every 4 hours
- 12-hour day shifts starting at 7:00 AM, 36 hours per week (with 48-hour capability)
- Every other weekend required, or approximately 4 weekend days per month
- No on-call requirements
- Float assignments may include like units such as MS-to-MS, MS-to-ICU tasks, MS-to-ER/MS holds, ICU-to-ICU, ICU-to-MS tasks (limit of 3), or ICU-to-ER/ICU holds
- EMR: Cerner (preferred); equipment includes Plum 360 IV pumps, Omnicell medication dispensing, and Spacelabs monitors
Requirements
- Active AL or compact RN license required
- Current certifications: BLS and NIHSS
- Minimum 18 months of Med/Surg experience required
- Cerner or Epic experience required
- Trauma or surgical nursing experience of at least 1 year preferred for Trauma Surgical unit placement
- Chemo administration certification preferred for Oncology unit placement
- Core clinical skills required vary by unit and may include: wound care, chest tubes, NGT, IV starts, blood draws from central lines, trach care, PEG tubes, ostomy care, foley care, wound vacs, CVL dressing changes, PCA pumps, and restraint management
- Telemetry experience is a plus — candidates with tele experience should be prepared to describe it in detail
- SSN, DOB (day and month), one reference from a charge nurse or above from the past 12 months, and copies of certifications required for consideration
Additional Information
- First-time travelers are welcome to apply with at least 18 months of Med/Surg experience and Cerner or Epic background
- Candidates must live more than 60 miles from the facility to be eligible
- Former permanent staff must have been separated for at least 6 months before starting as a traveler; the 6-month window is measured from the last shift worked to the proposed start date
- New travelers to the facility or those returning after 1+ year will complete 24 hours of classroom orientation and 24 hours of on-unit orientation; orientation for recent rehires will be assessed individually
- An interview (via SimpliFi) is required prior to placement — this facility does not use auto offers
- Holiday coverage is expected for one major and one minor seasonal holiday per policy; specific holiday scheduling is not guaranteed in advance
- Scrubs of any color are accepted
- Parking is available in the parking deck on levels 2 through 4 only
- Unit support includes CNAs (1:6 for vitals, ADLs, and glucose checks), a receptionist/HUC, a charge nurse, phlebotomy, an IV/VAT team, hospitalists, and telemetry monitoring techs
- Candidates with pre-planned time off should be aware that certain high-demand dates may require facility approval
