Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg Telemetry position at an acute care hospital in Michigan, requiring at least 1 year of MS/MS-Tele experience and comfort with limited on-site resources including independent IV starts.
Details
- Acute care hospital setting with a 24-bed inpatient unit that may also accommodate up to 10 observation and day surgery patients
- Common diagnoses include NHP, cellulitis, UTI, COPD, GU disorders, pacemaker management, sepsis, nursing home placements, and day surgical cases (orthopedic hips/knees, cholecystectomies, appendectomies, TURP-CBI)
- Nurse-to-patient ratios are 5:1 on day shift and 6:1 after 11pm; team nursing with LPNs follows a 2:7 ratio
- No IV team on-site — nurses must be fully independent with IV starts
- No drip titration required
- Telemetry strip review is conducted by the ICU daily; basic arrhythmia knowledge and familiarity with bedside tele monitors at the nurses' station is expected
- RT is available 24/7 and covers the entire hospital; CPAP equipment is used
- Hospitalist is on-site until 6pm daily, with telemedicine coverage overnight
- Charge nurse carries a patient assignment; travelers may be placed as relief charge nurse
- Nurse aides are present on the unit
- 12-hour shifts (7:00am–7:00pm or 7:00pm–7:00am); scheduling is self-directed when possible, with longer block scheduling preferred
- Weekend rotation required (EOW: Friday, Saturday, and Sunday)
- On-call or standby assignments are possible
- Floating to like units and patients is required
- EMR is currently Cerner, transitioning to Epic
- 13-week contract
Requirements
- Active MI RN license required by start date
- BLS certification (AHA) required; ACLS preferred
- Minimum 1 year of Med/Surg or Med/Surg Telemetry experience in an acute care setting
- Experience with TURP-CBI procedures preferred
- Critical access hospital or Trauma Level 3 or 4 experience preferred
- Basic telemetry arrhythmia knowledge required
- Must be proficient and independent with IV starts
- 2 professional references required for consideration: 1 supervisor reference from within the last 12 months of relevant experience, and 1 peer or supervisor reference from within the last 3 years in the same specialty
Additional Information
- Small pediatric patient population (approximately 3 cases per year) — travelers will not typically be assigned to peds patients unless they have prior pediatric experience or no other option is available
- Orientation consists of an 8-hour computer education day with 4 hours of shadowing, followed by a 12-hour orientation shift, with independent practice beginning on day 3
- Holiday coverage is required for 2 out of every 3 assigned holidays
- Solid, professional scrub colors required; no specific color designated
- Candidates who have previously worked for this health system must have an end date at least 6 months prior to their consideration date; hospital approval is also required
- Candidates residing within 80 miles of the facility are considered local, which may affect pay rate eligibility
- Travelers may be considered for this position regardless of whether their MI RN license is currently active, provided it will be active by the start date
