Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg Tele Observation Unit position requiring telemetry and oncology experience in a night shift, 13-week assignment.
Details
- Observation/MS/Tele/Oncology unit in an acute care hospital setting
- Patients are in observation status with anticipated short lengths of stay (up to two midnights), at which point a disposition decision is made
- Patient population includes dehydration, electrolyte abnormalities, nausea/vomiting, chemotherapy/radiation symptom management, acute kidney injury, palliative/pain control, UTI, syncope, post-procedure overnight stays, hospice transition, PEG tube/line placement, and fever of unknown origin
- Nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:4 with charge nurse in assignment; additional resources include RNs, PCAs, and UCAs
- Unit providers include APPs and supervising MDs
- Night shift: 3x12-hour shifts, 19:00–07:30
- May occasionally float to the ED to assist with inpatient Med/Surg tele patients awaiting transfer to an acute care unit
Requirements
- Active OH or Compact RN license required
- Required certification: BLS
- Preferred certifications: ACLS, OCN
- Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
- Required skills: telemetry monitoring, MS/Tele nursing, dysrhythmia interpretation, IV insertion, and PICC line management
- 2 professional references from a supervisor within the past 2 years
- Full 7-year work history with all gaps explained
Additional Information
- Goal of the observation unit is to provide high-quality, efficient care without premature discharge or admission, targeting disposition within two midnights
- Orientation to the ED will be provided prior to any float shifts
- Scrubs are not provided; navy blue and white scrubs required
- All time-off and scheduling requests must be submitted at the time of initial consideration
- First-time travelers are welcome to apply
- No break between consecutive assignments at this facility is required when changing representation (exception: Sterile Processing Techs still require a 30-day break)

Units are nice, staff are kind. Single patient rooms with 4:1 ratios day and night on med surg.
Cons
Scheduled every weekend, floated for the first 6 weeks of contract every shift. Not traveler friendly even though they say they are. Staff are treated well not travelers.
