Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced travel RN for a Labor & Delivery position requiring at least 2 years of L&D experience, active ME or compact RN license, and night shift availability.

Details

  • Night shift schedule: 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM
  • 36 hours per week on 12-hour night shifts
  • Level III NICU-affiliated Labor & Delivery unit serving as one of two NICUs in Maine, covering a large referral area
  • Unit includes 7 labor rooms, 2 triage rooms (L&D), 2 OR suites, an OBED with 2 triage rooms, and a 25-bed Postpartum/Antepartum/GYN/Mother-Baby unit
  • Approximately 1,800 deliveries per year with approximately 4 scheduled events daily (C-sections, versions, etc.)
  • Common diagnoses include PIH, GDM, pre-eclampsia, eclampsia, HELLP syndrome, shoulder dystocia, postpartum hemorrhage, multiples, fetal loss, and cervical ripening
  • Patient ratios: 1:1–3 for cervical ripening and laboring patients, 1:1 for active labor, up to 3 couplets or antepartum/NICU moms for postpartum/antepartum assignments
  • Floating may occur to Mother-Baby unit for antepartum, postpartum, or occasional Mother-Baby duties (Newborn Nursery RN handles 24-hour labs)
  • EMR: Cerner with Fetal Link; IV pumps: Alaris; medication dispensing: Pyxis; fetal monitoring: Fetal Link (remote at bedside and nurses station)
  • Weekend rotation requires a minimum of 4 shifts out of every 8 weekend shifts per schedule (consecutive weekends possible)
  • No on-call required; optional call shifts may be available
  • Holiday rotation required

Requirements

  • Active RN license — ME state or compact license required
  • Required certifications: BLS, ACLS, NRP, Intermediate or Advanced Fetal Heart Monitoring (FHM), and MOAB
  • Minimum 2 years of Labor & Delivery experience required
  • Proficiency in: Pitocin titration, fetal scalp electrodes, cervical exams, epidural placement assistance, insulin drip and magnesium drip management, shoulder dystocia management, circulating C-sections and/or receiving baby in OR, neonatal resuscitation, IUPC placement and monitoring, lactation support, and safe skin-to-skin protocol
  • Must have completed at least 1 prior travel assignment at a facility of comparable size and acuity — first-time travelers will not be considered
  • Candidates must have a permanent address 100+ miles south/southwest of the facility to be eligible
  • Candidates must not have previously worked at any Northern Light Health Hospital in a permanent capacity
  • Two references within the past year required, with at least one from a supervisor, manager, or director (charge nurse acceptable; peer references not accepted)
  • Copies of all certifications required for consideration
  • Full SSN and valid driver's license required for consideration
  • Flu vaccination required for clearance to start (medical exemptions considered on a case-by-case basis)

Additional Information

  • Responsibilities include managing laboring patients, circulating C-sections, neonatal resuscitation, newborn care for infants requiring continuous surveillance (including documenting feeds, vitals, and assessments), and providing lactation support
  • Candidates with charge/CRN experience are encouraged to highlight this in their profile
  • Unit support includes 24/7 charge nurse, CST, anesthesia, house supervisor, RT, OB provider, and family medicine residents (with attending backup); unit secretary and bed flow facilitator available on day shift only
  • Rooming-in model used for Mother-Baby; L&D and Mother-Baby are adjacent but separate locked units
  • Orientation consists of approximately 3 days: HR/preceptor orientation, OR/PACU training, and a preceptor shift on nights
  • Navy scrubs are provided on-site via scrub machine (6 credits allotted); street clothes are worn to and from the facility
  • Free parking available on site
  • All RTO requests require manager approval and must be submitted at the time of profile consideration
