Description

American Traveler is hiring a travel RN for a Med/Surg Float Pool position at a Level II Trauma Center in Montgomery, AL, requiring at least 18 months of Med/Surg and/or ICU experience and an AL or compact RN license.

Details

  • Float pool position covering multiple Med/Surg units within a 492-bed Level II Trauma Center and Primary Stroke Center
  • Possible unit assignments include: Trauma Surgical (6 North), Neuroscience (5 South), Med/Surg Oncology (5 North), Clinical Decision Unit (4 South), Orthopedics (3 South), and MS/Ortho/Urology (3 North)
  • Patient populations vary by unit and include general surgery, vascular, neurological, oncology, orthopedic, urology, ENT, and general Med/Surg patients such as COPD, CHF, sepsis, and renal failure
  • Patient ratios are typically 1:5–6 depending on unit assignment
  • Telemetry is monitored by telemetry techs; RNs are required to interpret and confirm strip readings every 4 hours
  • Unit assignment will be determined on the first day of orientation
  • Chemo administration experience is highly preferred for the Med/Surg/Oncology unit (5 North)
  • EMR: Cerner (preferred)
  • IV pumps: Plum 360 | Medication dispensing: Omnicell | Patient monitors: Spacelabs
  • Shift: 12-hour days, 7:00 AM–7:00 PM, 36 hours per week
  • Night shift (7:00 PM–7:00 AM) may also be available
  • Weekend rotation: every other weekend or 4 weekend days per month
  • No on-call responsibilities
  • Floating may occur to like units (e.g., MS-to-MS, MS-to-ICU tasks, MS-to-ER holds)
  • Schedule follows a 4-week cycle using Smart Square; no self-scheduling

Requirements

  • Active AL RN license or compact RN license required
  • Current certifications: BLS and NIHSS
  • Minimum 18 months of Med/Surg and/or ICU experience required
  • Cerner EMR experience required for candidates with strictly ICU backgrounds; preferred for all other candidates
  • Trauma or surgical nursing experience (at least 1 year) required for Trauma Surgical unit consideration
  • Clinical skills required across units include wound care, chest tubes, trach care, NGT/PEG tubes, IV starts, central line blood draws, foley care, ostomy care, pressure ulcer management, and medication administration
  • Telemetry strip interpretation experience is a plus and should be detailed if applicable
  • SSN, DOB (day and month), copy of certifications, and one reference from a charge nurse or above from the past 12 months required for consideration

Additional Information

  • Each unit is supported by CNAs (1:6 ratio for VS, ADLs, and glucose checks), a receptionist/HUC, charge nurse, phlebotomy team, IV/VAT team, hospitalist, and telemetry monitoring techs
  • New travelers and return travelers absent for 1+ year will complete 24 hours of classroom orientation followed by 24 hours of on-unit orientation
  • Former permanent staff must have been separated for at least 6 months before being eligible to return as a traveler
  • First-time travelers are welcome to apply
  • Holiday coverage is expected for one major and one minor seasonal holiday per facility policy; specific holiday scheduling is not guaranteed in advance
  • Pre-approved RTO blackout periods apply — check with your recruiter for current restricted dates before requesting time off
  • Scrubs: any color accepted
  • Parking is available in the facility parking deck on levels 2–4 only
  • Candidates must reside more than 60 miles from the facility to be eligible for this position
