Description

American Traveler is hiring a travel RN for an ICU night shift position requiring at least 2 years of critical care experience and active ACLS, BLS, and NIHSS certifications.

Details

  • Acute care hospital setting, ICU unit on Floor 4 (14-bed unit)
  • Common diagnoses include STEMI, NSTEMI, post cardiac arrest, sepsis, DKA, ETOH withdrawal, stroke with thrombectomy, stroke with/without TNK, GI bleeds, respiratory failure, and COPD
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:2 or 1:1 depending on acuity and specialty devices
  • Specialty devices on the unit include IABP, Impella, CRRT (NxStage), and Zoll Thermo for cooling — experience not required but may be utilized if applicable
  • RNs are required to titrate critical drips including Norepinephrine, Epinephrine, Phenylephrine, Nitroglycerin, Diltiazem, Nicardipine, Propofol, Fentanyl, Morphine, Versed, Precedex, Heparin, Insulin, and others
  • Respiratory equipment in use includes ventilators, NIPPV machines, CPAP machines, and Nitric Oxide — RNs must be able to troubleshoot and manage if RT is unavailable
  • SpaceLabs telemetry monitors in use; RNs are required to sign off on 2 of 3 strips completed by the Tele Tech and perform one independent tele strip per shift
  • Charting is done in Epic
  • Night shift: 12-hour shifts, 7p–7a, three 12s per week
  • Every other to every third weekend required
  • May be asked to participate in the holiday rotation
  • No on-call or standby requirement
  • Travelers are first to float; may be floated across campuses to Boise (MICU & SICU) and Nampa (ICU), approximately 10–22 miles away, or assigned as a PSA on any floor
  • 13-week contract

Requirements

  • Active ID or compact RN license required; must be active at time of consideration — pending licenses not accepted
  • Current certifications required: BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS
  • Minimum 2 years of critical care ICU experience (non-PCU) required for night shift
  • Epic EMR experience
  • Driver's license required
  • Two professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years, both including dates of employment and eligibility for rehire

Additional Information

  • RNs manage critically ill patients requiring vasopressors, sedation, anticoagulation, and complex hemodynamic monitoring
  • A designated charge nurse is present each shift and does not take a patient assignment unless necessary
  • Support staff includes PCTs at a 1:8 ratio (generally 2 per shift) and a dedicated Tele Tech/HUC for the ICU
  • Intensivist coverage: days have in-house intensivist; nights are covered by a tele MD and a 'boot on the ground' physician covering ICU admissions across multiple campuses
  • RT is available 24/7
  • Orientation includes hospital-wide orientation, unit-specific onboarding, and 1 preceptored shift on the floor (with potential for 1 additional shift if needed)
  • Scheduling is managed by unit leadership; travelers fill gaps after core staff scheduling is complete — block scheduling and special scheduling requests are not accepted for this position
  • Max of 5 consecutive shifts allowed unless approved by leadership
  • Float notice goal is 2 hours prior to shift start when floating to another facility; mid-shift float requests may occur — floating is done on a rotational basis
  • Any color scrubs acceptable
  • Candidates must reside more than 50 miles from the facility to be eligible — no local candidates
  • Former permanent employees must have been separated for at least one year before being eligible for a travel assignment
  • First-time travelers are welcome to apply
  • This unit has a strong track record with travelers — past travelers report a welcoming team environment where travel staff are treated as part of the team
American Traveler Job ID #P-708357. Pay package is based on 12 hour shifts and 36 hours per week (subject to confirmation) with tax-free stipend amount to be determined. Posted job title: Travel RN - ICU

Pros

Ratios stay at 4:1 for tele.

Cons

Management is suboptimal. While accepting towards travelers, it does indicate the need for travelers and the turnover rate of their own core staff. Tread lightly
