Description
American Traveler is hiring a travel RN for a Medical Oncology PCU (Progressive Care Unit) position in Ohio, requiring high-acuity PCU experience and an OH or compact RN license.
Details
- 36-bed Oncology Telemetry unit with over 24 beds dedicated to PCU-level care, located within a cancer hospital
- Patient population includes solid tumor, orthopedic oncology, and thoracic oncology diagnoses
- High-acuity PCU patients with a smaller subset of med/surg telemetry patients
- PCU patient ratio is 1:3; med/surg telemetry ratio is 1:4-5
- Day/night rotating schedule with 12-hour shifts (days: 7:00–19:30; nights: 19:00–7:30)
- Shift assignments (days, nights, or a combination) are reviewed every 4-week scheduling period based on staffing needs
- Self-schedule request system used — preferred schedule is submitted before the final schedule is posted
- Floating required within units of equivalent or lower acuity
- Equipment used includes GE B450 telemetry monitors, Alaris pumps, Stryker beds, bladder scanner, PCA pumps, and continuous bladder irrigation setups
Requirements
- Active OH or compact RN license required
- Current certifications required: BLS (BCLS), ACLS, and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
- High-acuity PCU experience required
- Required clinical skills: cardiac dysrhythmia interpretation, rapid response team utilization, feeding tube care and management, port access, blood product administration, central/PICC/peripheral line care and management, IV insertion, heparin protocols, non-titrating cardiac drip management, PCA management, cardiac drip titration, chest tube management (Emerson/Pleur-evac), external CPAP/BiPAP, high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC), ABG interpretation, and tracheostomy management
- 2 professional references required — at least one must be from a Manager, Director, or Supervisor; a Charge RN is acceptable as the second reference; no coworker references accepted
- Previous travel experience preferred
- 2 years of oncology experience preferred but not required
Additional Information
- Oncology experience is preferred but not required — candidates without oncology backgrounds are encouraged to apply
- Pediatric patients are occasionally present on the unit but are extremely rare and primarily managed by permanent staff; pediatric experience is not required
- Preferred skills include: management of dysrhythmias, IV insulin and insulin drip titration protocols, phlebotomy, chemotherapy administration and monitoring, wound care/wound vac, arterial line management, surgical drain management, and non-invasive airway management
- Orientation consists of one week of Monday–Friday dayshift training followed by 36 hours of on-unit orientation with a preceptor
- Unit has a heavy focus on infection prevention protocols and fall prevention
- Local candidates are accepted at the same rate as travelers — no radius restriction
- RTO must be submitted upfront and built into the contract; requests are limited to 7 days or less
- Former employees of the facility are eligible after a 6-month separation period
- Ohio state fingerprinting is required — candidates should be prepared to complete this process promptly after accepting an assignment; instructions will be provided by the credentialing team

Cons
Scheduled every weekend, floated for the first 6 weeks of contract every shift. Not traveler friendly even though they say they are. Staff are treated well not travelers.
