Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Progressive Care Unit (PCU/HVU) position in Rapid City, SD, requiring cardiac procedural recovery experience and active SD or compact RN licensure.
Details
- Hospital-based Heart/Vascular Unit (HVU) — a mixed acuity unit encompassing Intermediate Care, Telemetry, and Med/Surg level patients
- Patient population includes direct admits, ED admits, and post-Cath Lab patients with conditions such as MI, NSTEMI/STEMI, CHF, dysrhythmia, pacemaker malfunction, and epicardial pacers
- Unit also serves as a backup stroke unit and medical overflow
- Step-down level care provided for post-cardiac/vascular, post-cardiac cath, post-open heart surgery, post-TAVR, post-EP studies, and post-pacemaker insertion patients
- Patient ratio is typically 1:4, and may be 1:3 depending on acuity
- 44-bed unit
- Charting via Epic; experience preferred but not required — notify recruiter if no Epic experience
- Equipment includes Alaris pumps and Omnicell medication dispensing
- Tele tech oversees cardiac monitoring; RN confirms strips at 6a and 6p
- 12-hour night shifts, 36 hours per week
- Weekend rotation every other weekend
- No on-call responsibilities
- Holiday coverage required on a rotating every-other basis
Requirements
- Active RN license — South Dakota (SD) or Compact license required
- Certifications required: BLS, ACLS, and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
- Graduation from a board-approved nursing education program
- Minimum 1.5 years of general nursing experience
- PCU-level RN experience required
- Experience with cardiac procedural recovery (CABG, TAVR, post-cardiac cath) required
- Proficiency with MI pharmacology and titratable cardiac/vasoactive drips (Cardizem, Amiodarone, Nitro, Levophed, Dopamine) required; manager approval needed if not met
- Experience with Heparin drips, cardiac rhythm interpretation, and chest tube management required
- TNK administration experience preferred
- 2 professional references dated within the past year required for consideration
- DOB and SSN required for consideration
Additional Information
- Unit support includes CNAs (ratio 1:5–8 depending on shift), an unassigned charge nurse, phlebotomy for peripheral blood draws, respiratory therapy (RT) available 24/7, and a hospitalist in-facility 24/7
- Resource nurse available occasionally; no IV/VAT team on unit
- Orientation consists of 2 partial days of education followed by 3 supervised 12-hour shifts on the unit
- Floating may occur to the sister General PCU unit, or to MS/Tele or ICU to care for PCU-level patients, always within scope of practice
- Navy blue scrubs required
- Free parking available on-site
- First-time travelers are considered with 2 or more years of experience
- Candidates must reside at least 100 miles from any facility in the health system to be eligible
- Former permanent staff must wait 1 full year before returning as a traveler
- Up to 7 days of RTO may be approved; a full week off requires a contract extension
- No time off approved during the first 3 weeks of August annually due to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally
